Hey guys, this weekend I just visited Georgetown. If you really like UVA I highly suggest considering Gtown. The Campus is beautiful and the dorms were fantastic. Only downsides are the cost is rather high (54k per year) and has a little harder winter than UVA. I'm visiting many more colleges this summer and I'll post a little review here. Also if you got to D.C and want good steak go to "the caucus room". The restaurant is expensive (expect to pay 50-70$ per person) but the food is fantastic. I almost forgot to mention, the area around Gtown is unreal. The town homes just add to the beautiful campus.

I assume that was your first time visiting DC? It’s a wonderful town! Did you get a Georgetown Cupcake? They’re almost as good as [Cappallino’s Crazy Cakes](http://www.locallectual.com/tenants/crazy-cakes). :)

Ahh man! I wish I told you I was going there before Dean J. I had been to D.C. before but I was on the outskirts and was turned away by the town. However, I had never been to the Georgetown area and I was amazed to say the least. The school is still not my top choice but atleast I found another school that is much like UVA.
Also, Dean J, if you know any good places to eat near Duke or UNC please tell me. I’m going with my dad and brother to look at both these schools on Thursday and Friday.

UVAorBust-
This would be a great question to post on the Duke/UNC Forums! Students are more than willing to help you out. Locals always know the best spots!! Have a great time! :)

Franklin Street is where you want to go if you’re in Chapel Hill.

Just ask your tour guides at the end of the tour. You’ll get plenty of suggestions.
Some would say you must, must, must go for Time Out biscuits, but that’s more of a late night stop. :)

I was just watching Man vs Food and I remembered that there was an episode about the UNC Duke triangle. I’m going to try all 3 restaurants that Adam visited. I’m leaving on thursday night and will visit UNC on Friday and Duke on Saturday. When I’m on the plan ride home I’ll be sure to leave a review of the colleges + the food (planning on downing a lot of southern food, one of my favorite cuisines.)

Going to duke and unc this weekend. Right now I’m on the train into my internship in the city and I’m flying out with dad and brother. Dean J, I’m definitely going to that chicken and biscuit place. One of the reasons my dad brother and I are so interested in looking at colleges is we get to go to many places on Man vs Food. Also my mom is a health finatic so what we eat while we’re away won’t hurt her ;).

I hit Georgetown (and GWU) today, hitting UVA on Saturday. As far as weather goes, Charlottesville and DC have pretty much the same winters. I live like 15 minutes outside of DC in VA and it actually seems like Charlottesville gets more snow than we do.

How’s the tour at UVA? I’ve never been to the campus before.

Being closer to the water sometimes gives DC a harder winter than we get here. This past winter was the worst in about a decade (maybe more). We don’t get much snow accumulation, though it does snow here. When the big storm hit here, my neighborhood shared two snow shovels and a few garden spades…most people didn’t own snow shovels.

Check out pictures from the first snow storm of 2009:

That was a huge difference from the storm we got this past year:

Just for fun, here’s a video from the Rotunda after the big store in February. Classes were canceled on February 7th, the first full day of canceled classes since 2001 (there have been a few half days here and there).

Just finished UNC tour and I’ll post something quick on my iPhone. Dinos I strongly suggest to anyone you take the tour at UVA because the tour guide gives a great speech about what a good essay is. Apart from that the tour guide was very comical. I’ll post a full review about UNC when I get to the hotel. Ohh and by the way, Dean J, I just got back from time out chicken… All I can say is Ohh My God. Anyways will post a full review about all restaurants and the school when I get to a computer.

I’m at the airport and on an iPhone but I have to comment about duke. I was very turned off by duke. Going into the tour I thought the school wad going to be awesome because of it’s amazing sports and school spirit (so I thought). However me and my dad were both very disappointed. Firstly driving to the school, the school was surrounded by a horrible neighborhood. Atleast at unc you got to take a long senic drive to the campus but the campus at duke was surrounded by a run down area. Secondly I felt the assistant giving the admissions session was very very pretentious. I know many people refer to duke as the “harvard of the south” and the dean sure made sure that we knew that. I was so turned off by the duke tour I didn’t even bother with the actual tour. We just packed the car and left. Anyways I’ll post a full review when I get home. Ohh and one more thing the food is absolutely out of this world.

My cousin who went to Duke was actually turned off by UVA because our tour guide was pretentious!! What can you say!!

Lol hazelorb, I really guess it all depends on where your from and who’s your guide. I live in new York right now and going back to the south felt so good. Southern hospitality isn’t a myth, the people in the south are generally much more welcoming. And I came upwith a question. I visited UVA when I was going into 8th grade. When I visited they didn’t take down my name or anything because I arrived late. Is it worth it for me to visit again so that they have a file started for me? I mean I’ve emailed Dean J a couple of times with more personal questions that I couldn’t post here but do you think that created a file for me? Right now just judging by the colleges I’ve visited my list goes like this

1 UVA (obvious and I doubt this will change)

2 UNC

3 Georgetown

4 Duke

5 University of Florida

6 Florida State University

I’m visiting Univerity of Michigan on Monday and I think it will take Georgetowns spot for sure…

UVa doesn’t record visits. Also, there’s more to a university than pretentious tour guides and pretty buildings and landscapes

Lol, yea shoebox, although I’ve seen 3 other colleges and I basically know what I’m looking for. Believe me, I thought duke was my second choice to UVA but I was just so so turned off. On the bright side I did really enjoy UNC. If I don’t get into UVA unc is high on my list. Also this question has been lurking in my head for a while now. How much does the person reading your essay care about how much the applicant wants to go to the school. I mean I know if dean j gets my app she knows how I will definitly go to the school but what about the other readers if I don’t get dean j. I’m in the process of writing my essays and I don’t know how to incorperate in my essay how I will definitly attend UVA if accepted. Anyways I get home tonight and I’ll post stuff about the schools and where I ate (if you guys haven’t noticed yet I LOVE food. It is really one of my passions and every time I travel to a new place I try the food that the place offers)

The “Adventures of UVAorBust” should be on the Best Seller list…I can’t wait to see how the story ends! I sure hope it’s a happy ending…he deserves it!

UVAorBust…You have Duke listed as your #4 choice, and yet you said you and your dad were so turned off you didn’t even do the tour. Do yourself a favor…DON’T apply! There are so many great schools out there. Don’t apply to Duke merely because of the prestige or whatever. It’ll be a waste of your time (essays) and your parents’ money (app fees). Truly, you should apply to reach, match, and safety schools, but the thing is you need to love them ALL enough to actually go to each and every one because you never know what will happen in April.

I actually think I’m not applying to Duke. I’m honestly increadibly suprised. I was looking foward to duke so so much. I love basketball and I though Duke would have so much spirti which is what i’m looking for. During the tour the guide didn’t even mention basketball. UVA would be godly but the other choices are still out there. UNC is pretty nice and definitly worth visiting if you like UVA.

UNC and Duke are rivals anyways, it’s like an unwritten rule that you only apply to 1 of the 2…

Way back when I was going through this process, I went on the big whirl wind loop of schools. At one of the schools that seemed like a great match on paper, we encountered happy students, helpful staff members, and a nice admission officer during the information session. Unfortunately, I didn’t click with the tour guide and foolishly decided the school wasn’t for me despite positive interactions with a number of people.

My mother insisted that we eat lunch and then take the afternoon tour. Smart women…the next tour was wonderful.

Obviously, schedules don’t allow everyone to do what we did back then, but ideally, interaction with one person won’t overshadow the entire campus visit.

At UVa, we assume that if you take the time to get through three essays and complete an application, you want to go to our school. :)

That being said, “demonstrated interest” is a factor at many other schools. They are often up front about that.
