I'm going to be visiting Rice University in February, and I was wondering if there is anything in particular I should do. I plan to attend an admissions seminar and take a tour around campus. Is there anything else I should do while I'm there? Thanks.

Talk to professors and students if you get the chance. Ask lots of questions. Sign in somewhere so they know you visited.
Are you sophomore/junior/applicant/accepted?

Oh, one more thing to do: marvel at how gorgeous the campus is. Close your eyes and pretend you’re in heaven. Open your eyes and you will think “well, close enough”

If you plan to park on campus, beware that they have a not so common system of collecting charges. When you enter a parking lot, you scan a credit card to get in, when you get out, you need to scan the SAME card to get out. If the cards don’t match up, it will be a hassle to try to clear things up later.

If you are going to be there on a weekday…

Go to the admissions office (which is where you’ll be anyway for the tour and info session), ask them for a list of classes that are offered so you can sit in on one or two that sound interesting to you.

Take advantage of a lunch program that allows prospective students & their families to eat in one of the on-campus serveries and sit with current students and get your questions answered.

Go eat barbecue and Mexican food in Houston:).

i’m a junior right now, and i’m gonna visit on a weekday, in case any of you were wondering.

thanks for all the advice. btw, what kinds of questions should i ask? i’m interested in research and the sciences, so should i ask some professors about internships and the opportunities for research? anything else worth asking also?

What day are you visiting? Maybe I’ll be your tour guide.

I would still recommend talking to students other than your tour guide, so that you can get multiple perspectives. Really, Rice students don’t mind being asked about our school; we love to brag.

lol, i’ll keep that in mind. i think i’m visiting either Tuesday or Wednesday after Presidents’ Day

A good place to talk to students is in one of the campus dining places.

Oh, my day’s Friday. Oh, well.

thanks for all the advice guys!

hey…one more question. my family and I are staying for about 3 or 4 days, so what would you recommend doing or seeing around Houston during that time?

you’ve just missed the Mardi Gras in Galveston, & you won’t be here to see the trail riders at the Houston Livestock Show in March…

Rice Village is a very nice place to visit.

Not far from Rice in the vicinity of Westheimer/W.Alabama & Kirby, watch out for those red light cameras. There are certain intersections in that part of town that do not allow right turn on red.

If you have time, visit Lucy at HMNS. The Minute Maid Park downtown has a retractable roof, I believe they conduct tours. There’s also a downtown Aquarium where you can eat lunch & be surrounded by fish. I’ve never been there but I saw pictures of it, looks pretty fun, but touristy. Kemah Boardwalk is not too far away (I-45), another touristy place you can do in one day with a visit to NASA. Kemah Boardwalk also has a very nice restaurant that features a huge aquarium. Very pretty & special inside, if you go to this aquarium, skip the one in downtown. Keep going south on I-45 & you’ll arrive at Galveston, the beaches are not the best, go there to see some of the best looking historical buildings…

Yao Ming has a restaurant somewhere on Westheimer, I believe, if you’re lucky you might see him or his parents. I saw his parents once at a grocery store. They’re so tall! Another Rockets player also has a restaurant somewhere in town, I heard it’s really good, can’t remember his name now…

thanks for the advice.

yet another question lol. i’m assuming Rice is closed on President’s Day so that means no tours right that day? it would be open the day after though right?

According to the listing of staff holidays, President’s Day is not holiday for Rice.

ooooo nice. maybe i’ll visit that day instead.
