visiting in the summer?

Is it possible to visit colleges during the summer break? Are most places open then? Can you do interviews in the summer?

Yes, it is possible to visit colleges during the summer. Most places have at least some info sessions and tours available. While it's not optimal, since most students won't be there and you won't get a real "feel" for campus life, it is helpful and sometimes the only option.

Some will also allow interviews during the summer. Check the colleges' websites to be sure; they usually list the summer schedules.

I might add we found that most campuses did not offer tours and interviews on Saturdays in the summer.

I would visit campuses in the summer as a last resort. As Chedva said, students aren't around and you can't get a real feel for the campus. I learned a great deal more about the colleges I visited from the random students I approached than the tours/information sessions.

Last resort it is- it's that or not going at all (don't live in the US but can probably visit in the summer).

How helpful is it, though? Is it worth travelling around to visit some places, or not?

Yes do go in the summer if that is your only chance! My daughter really can't miss school during the school year so we visited schools the summer before 12th and she was able to tell a great deal about schools during her visits. She new right away that she would never want to go to PTON. She new that UVA was too big! Those were two schools that as parents we thought would be great schools for her. She is going to a small school next year and all of the places she visited during the summer helped her figure out what she wanted.

Visiting in the summer is certainly better than not visiting at all. Particularly if you're international. You'll get an idea of what living in the US might be like, even if you don't get the full feeling for the individual colleges.

We're visiting colleges this summer. Sometimes that's the only option; I couldn't get the time off work before then. It has to be better than NOT visiting.

I was able to set up college tours. Haven't set up any interviews yet.
