Visiting/interview

My son is very interested in Harvey Mudd (he's a rising junior). We live on the East Coast, and need to visit and arrange an interview for him. He also would like to talk to some of the computer science/math faculty. Can we manage this in the summer? Is there a better part of the summer for it?
Also any tips on one or two quick things to do off-campus?

Yes, you can. I’d suggest you talk with an Admission officer to arrange some time with faculty members. We visited in midsummer; geek_son had his interview and a tour. The tour guide asked him if he’d like to meet faculty in his department of interest – he ended up having lunch at a full table with a prof and a bunch of Mudders who were there for summer research. This was spontaneous, but if you talk to an Admission officer ahead of time, it can probably be arranged for your son to meet with some faculty.

Rising sophs are there taking summer math for the next two and a half weeks, and students in all grades are there on summer research for longer… your son would probably find a few of them to chat with if he hangs out in Jay’s Place around lunchtime. But again, the Admission officers would be able to help make arrangements. If you’re traveling so far, you probably don’t want to leave it to chance.

Quick things to do off campus – I’m sure some Mudders would have better ideas, but I’d suggest visiting Claremont Village (two good places to eat: Podge’s Claremont Juice Company and Pizza’n’Such). We found something to do from the flyers posted on the wall at Podge’s. All spontaneous, but worked out very well because we’d kept the day open. :)

Good luck to your son, and to you on the upcoming parental roller coaster ride of college admissions. ;)

2.5 weeks for summer math? Can’t believe I had to suffer through 5 weeks -_-

Summer research lasts about 10 weeks starting from about now and after that the campus is more or less empty, so I would go preferably during summer math but definitely during summer research.

Off-campus, you’re about an hour from the beach, LA, Disneyland, and Six Flags.

Three weeks, but they’re midway through the first. But it’s only one semester’s worth – unlike past years, I gather.

Two half-courses, yeah.

Also, if you come during summer math, you’d get to see what classes are like. Granted, the summer math courses aren’t exactly like regular classes, but I still think they’re fairly representative of what Mudd is like. No one has mentioned this yet, but the last day of summer math is 6/4, though from what I can tell, we probably won’t be having lectures on the 4th (final exams…yippee).

There are also lots of faculty here doing research, so no worries there.

[Oh, and if any alums are wondering…the math core is only 3 semesters for the classes of 2013 and later, so that’s why summer math is only 3 weeks long. (however, there are some more complicated requirements for certain majors - for example, there’s a new Engineering Math half-course that engineers have to take in addition to the 3 semesters.)]

Darn - mine has finals and awards ceremonies that end on …yup…6/4. But we can make it out while summer research is still going on.
Are the new core requirements up on the website yet?

We did our visit to campus the middle of August. There were a few kids around finishing up research, but the campus was pretty empty. But we had a good tour and it confirmed that my son was really interested. He didn’t talk to any professors though until admitted students weekend. He is a happy Mudder now. We had the same issue. Coming from the east coast, it just isn’t always possible to do the visits during the school year.

I visited Mudd during the summer and was able to talk to a professor in the engineer department, so I think you can schedule to talk to a professor during the summer.

We walked around the Claremont Village and that’s it. I guess you can take the metrolink (name?) and see what’s around the area.

I went to visit during the first or the second day of Orientation.
It was pretty busy
