Hi,

I will be visiting Lawrence on June 17th and I was wondering if you have any suggestions, such as what to ask (and to whom), any secret spots that people unfamiliar with Lawrence would not know about, places to eat, etc...I am scheduled to take a tour and then talk with an admissions counselor.

Thanks,
J

There will be some students on campus–some are doing summer research with faculty and others will have summer jobs. Ask them what they think of the place. Students are approachable and realize that getting information from them is a good idea. Enjoy a snack in front of the new campus center–if it’s not raining. You will get a feel for the place if you just watch people going by. Apollon features very good Greek cuisine. Have some coffee, or tea, at either Harmony Cafe or Brewed Awakenings–both on College Ave and near campus. Ask your counselor anything that seems relevant to helping you make a decision. Walk several blocks down (west) College Ave in the evening or at dusk. Students frequent the many restaurants. This time of year, there won’t be nearly as many students as usual; remember that when you take the walk.

School will be out for the summer, so it will be hard for you to get a “feel” for the place. Take a tour, and you will see the size (small) of the campus. Walk down college ave to the west to see the cafe/restaurants/shops. If you have a car, drive to Fox Valley Mall to see the major shopping mall - when you are a student, I think you can take the City Bus there, and occasional groups arrange shuttles for the students.

Staying in the dorms are mandatory, so try to get a tour of each of the dorms with the most freshmen (plantz, kohler). That way, when you make a dorm selection, you will know what they look like. Don’t bother touring dorms like Heit (?sp) because the upperclassmen get first choice.
