<p>I'm going with my D to visit Miss St. She is doing one of those big group day visits (only thing that we could work out along with a marching band audition). We did a couple of these visits with my S and just didn't like them much. I know they have to move large groups of people around in a short amount of time, but I feel like you just don't get the whole picture. Plus they don't let you meet with any departments, and it's their spring break so not many students on campus, etc.</p>
<p>We will have another day to visit school and area on our own, so I'm asking for suggestions for any "hidden treasures" (in the big metropolis of Starkville...I know!) we might want to check out. I did see on the MSU website the "best of" contest so that helped with some places we may want to eat, but that was about all.</p>
<p>Here’s why I think it’s an issue whether you care about basketball (insert any other sport at any other school that worships that sport) or not. The administration is condoning behavior from a coach. That shows you the values and priorities. Here is a team that has shown horrible behavior- led by the coach. Here is a coach who tells players to deliberately injury players on the other team (heard by camera crew- not just a rumor).<br>
When you get to college, the culture of the place matters. Just my opinion, and I’m sure you can have a decent experience there anyway, but…</p>
<p>I didn’t realize BB was a big deal in southern schools, but I guess it is an SEC school so…</p>

<p>But let’s be realistic…if everything that happened at every school was public knowledge our kids wouldn’t go anywhere. I think it’s a good representation of life. There is always that one “bad” person in your office, or coaching your kid or the team your kid is playing against, or standing next to you in line at Starbucks that won’t play by the rules the rest of us follow and in many cases seem to get away with it.</p>
<p>Not choosing a school that otherwise could be perfect for you and has exactly the academic program you want, etc., because of the bad actions of a coach and/or the administration of the school in this particular instance, gives them way too much power!</p>
<p>But, it’s definitely something to add to the pro-con list. But IMHO, not an issue for writing the school off in it’s entirety.</p>
<p>Since you’re going to be in Starkville, have you considered driving the 80 minutes to visit Bama as well? Tuscaloosa is just 55 miles east on US 83. </p>

<p>We would, but she’s a HS senior so a bit late to be looking at schools she hasn’t already applied to. MS ST was a last minute addition to her list. She had semi-valid reasons and applied to most all of her schools sight-unseen (but with a good bit of on-line and word-of-mouth research).</p>
<p>I think bama has rolling admissions, but doubt she’d get any $$ at this stage of the game.</p>
