Visiting Nashville soon ...

DS & I will be visiting Nashville in a couple of weeks. We already have the tour schedule and are excited to see the campus. When he signed up many weeks ago, the 'dore for a day tour was already full. We are scheduled for a morning tour and are hoping to get more info on the engineering department. Any recommendations for that? I looked at the classes available to sit in on, but most of those are also in the morning, so I guess he should have registered for the afternoon tour.

While we're in Nashville, DS would like to see some of the music scene. He plays bass guitar and is interested in finding out what type of opportunities will be available for him to continue playing if he attends Vanderbilt. Do you have any recommendations for must see venues? I'm thinking Bluebird Cafe, maybe? We will be there over a Friday night.

When we were at Vanderbilt last year for Black and Gold Days we made an appointment with one of the Associate Deans of Engineering. It was a great way to get more specific information about the engineering program at Vandy. We spent time in the Engineering Buildings by ourselves just looking around. It gave us a good feel for the campus. There is a lot you can do on your own.

Our son loved the school, applied ED1 for Mechanical Engineering and will be attending in the Fall.

Congratulations to your DS! I will have son e-mail the engineering department. Thank you!

Have a great visit! Along with an incredible school of engineering, there are MANY groups on campus where he can play. For the Nashville scene, Bluebird is great. Just be aware that it is a tiny venue, and sometimes you have to wait outside for a long time. You have to order food or drink to stay. Beware, the food is pub fare. But the wine is fine ( for parents, at least: )
another one to check out is Douglas Corner, and 3rd and Lindsley…great food and music, lots of local semi famous play there, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. another one to check out for live music is The Commodore Grill, right on the edge of campus at the Holiday Inn. most Friday and Saturday nights they have writers nights, and I have seen some amazing talent there (and some questionable ones as well) food is good!
By all means, walk up and down Broadway and 2nd avenue! Tons of live music, honky tonks, drunk karaoke…so fun!
I’m local, but have a sophomore there and next year her sister will join…let me know if you want food suggestions. Eat at Greens on campus, yummy!

Don’t forget the free Concerts in the Park right across from Vandy in spring/summer … and Cannery Ballroom/Mercy Lounge, The Basement (at Grimey’s Records), Exit/Inn (walking distance from campus).

Thank you for the music venue suggestions! I’ll see how many we’re able to visit in our 24 hour stay!

beadymom–well lucky for you, Cafe Coco is open 24 hours serving food and live music–haha. You might even see Vandy kids eating there since it is one of the Taste of Nashville restaurants where students can use their meal money. Don’t know that the service or food is that great but it is fairly close to campus off Elliston Place.

Ooooh, Cafe Coco takes Vandy Money now? My D would have loved it if they took it back when she was on a meal plan! They have very good food.

I appreciate all the information. We’ll be making a mad dash to Nashville during Spring Break - an overnight trip. S will be doing 'Dore for a Day and we have several appointments. I’m trying to take care of a few things now so that S doesn’t have to handle it at the beginning of the semester. I think he will be busy.

I would love to hear of restaurant suggestions for an upcoming visit to Nashville- any favorites ? Also, what are some great music venues besides Bluebird. I’ve looked around on trip advisor and a few other sites- so many recommendations so I thought I would ask here as well. Thanks!

Nearby to campus, I love Cabana which is located behind the well known and delicious Pancake Pantry on 21st, a wonderful place to enjoy brunch if you don’t mind waiting in line for a bit.

We’ve gone to Amerigo on West End near campus every time we’ve been in Nashville. I’ll be making reservations for Parent’s Weekend. It has great memories since it is the restaurant we went to after visiting Vanderbilt for the first time.

We also like the Smiling Elephant on 8th street. A little ways away from campus, but great thai food. We also enjoyed the Loveless Caf

Not to shoot down Amerigo but it’s pretty average Italian :P. There are so many great restaurants in Nash.

Loveless Cafe is an icon.

My daughter’s favorite is J. Alexanders (a chain, but based out of Nashville)–the chopped salad with chicken & champagne vinaigrette dressing is out of this world! There is a location on West End near campus but also one on White Bridge Rd across from the Target that might not be as crowded on Family Weekend. If the line is too long at Pancake Pantry (try the Sugar & Spice pancakes) we’ve had good breakfasts at Noshville on Broadway. As for music venues–the Exit/In on Elliston Place used to be “The” place, not sure if it is any more?
Enjoy your visit!

Thanks for the suggestions!
