I'm taking my tour of UNC next month with my family. Does anyone have any tips on what to do while I'm there? Good restaurants or fun activites? Thanks :)

What are your interests? Visiting UNC in the summer, while fine, can be a little misleading given the lack of students. When we are there, classes in session and sports are being played, it is a lot more vibrant. If you are a sports fan, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the UNC basketball museum (next to the Dean Dome). It will give you a feel for the school’s basketball heritage. I especially liked Coach K’s letter to Michael Jordan after Michael Jordan turned down d00k. To go to the Dean Dome, you will also be on South Campus where most first year student reside. You won’t get access to the dorms, but, you can see them. I believe RHA has a sample dorm room on South to visit (ask about that). Most visitors like to take a picture at the Old Well, visit the Morehead Planetarium and stroll through Coker Arboretum. Here is a link to a UNC website for some top destinations <a href=“Come Visit Us - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill”>http://unc.edu/visitors/top-destinations/ . There are lots of good restaurants on Franklin Street. Top of The Hill restaurant is good (it is a brew pub), 411 West is good for Italian, Kipos is good for Greek, Talulla’s is good for Mediterranean. For barbecue, I like The Pit in Raleigh. In Chapel Hill, for barbecue, many like Allen & Sons. While the eastern NC style barbecue is good there, it is a little too dumpy for me.

Thank you so much! That is all very helpful. I’ll take it into consideration @newyawk

This is a great reference for restaurants: http://www.northcarolinatravels.com/food/chapelhill-carrboro-restaurant-reviews/

One other suggestion for UNC visitors: if you have enough time, it’s a good idea to spend a couple of hours in Carrboro, which really seems like “West Chapel Hill” to newcomers. Many of the great restaurants mentioned in Matt Barrett’s website (see above!) are in Carrboro, and many, many students end up living in that funkier community for their last year or two at UNC. It’s a pleasant contrast to main Franklin Street strip.
