Visiting NYC from Cornell?

Do students do this on campus often? How hard is it to get to NYC? Do you have to drive, or is there a train or something that goes direct? If so, how long does it take?

the most common way is a bus (there are different bus lines…cornell even has its own “campus to campus”) takes under 6hrs (5?)…

the next most common way is a direct flight from ITH airport

if you want to go to NYC but dont have a friend who lives near the city…then look into HOSTELS (still pricy but cheaper than a hotel)

Take the Shortline bus…cheapest and pretty reliable.

How long does the shortline bus take?

C2CBUS.COM it leaves from cornell and stops at 2 places in the city and on days ith heavy traffic it says 4.5 hours. My friend just gave me the link for next year, just in case. It’s 150 round trip, or 75 one way.

^that price is ridiculous for a 4 hr bus ride. When I bought roundtrip plane tix from ith back to florida it was only $118 (160 w/ tax). No way I would pay $150 for a roundtrip busride to NYC. Anyways, its not hard at all to find someone going to NYC and back on breaks to catch a ride with. My friend took a bus to back home (NYC) for spring break and said it was only $40, so must be with a different bus line.

o_o
I thought it was going to be so much more convenient to visit the city.

Would anyone happen to know what the price is to fly down there? I heard the airport is a little more expensive because it’s a smaller airport?

i guess there are perks to using the bus…it does have wireless internet!

^Check prices on the airline websites. It is actually cheaper for me to fly from ithaca to florida (substantially cheaper…$100 less for roundtrip) than from newark, and the funny thing is that the ithaca flight connects in newark.

The shortline bus is $70 roundtrip, which is really quite reasonable considering the cost of driving roundtrip to NYC is likely close to $200 after counting gas, insurance, depreciation, etc.

^^$70 roundtrip actually sounds pretty reasonable. Is that the 5 hour ride that people were talking about earliar?

Yes. Shortline.

That actually sounds pretty good.
Do you know if theres a bus that leaves like, during the night or something, so that you can sleep during the ride and get there in the morning? Haha I guess like a red-eye bus ride :D

Coach is the cheapest and has the most trips between Cornell an NYC (8 times a day). To answer your first question, not many students use this often, but it’s great to know that you have the option. I’ve been 5 times this year already, where some of my friends haven’t gone at all.

Also, the dorms occasionally have one-day NYC trips for super cheap. For example, I saw Phantom for $30 (which included the bus ride), and we all got to explore the city with the rest of the time before and after the show. There was a trip to the Met recently for the same price, and in two weeks there’s another one for Chicago.

Shortline’s great, but whenever I’ve needed to go the city, there’s been someone going when I wanted to! Check the facebook application “Carpool”, its not so bad.

To the two of you who answered last: thank you very much!
Both of those comments were extremely helpful!

shortline is 5 hours, campus to campus is about 3.5 because there are no stops. campus to campus is much more comfortable/has internet and plugs. definitely a luxury that i use only when im going down for an interview and the company pays. i have flown from ithaca to nyc for interviews and it takes literally just as long once you take a cab in from the city etc. your best bet is to find a ride (usually someone you know will go up every weekend) or take shortline.

i know some kids who are from ny that drive down every 2 or 3 weeks. i went 5 times last semester, twice this semester.

for shortline, can I purchase tickets online??

on that link that you guys posted, I don’t see cornell listed as one of the destinations

jcas:
Do you know what the price difference is between shortline and campus to campus?
