I am a recently admitted HS senior who will be visiting Oberlin on Wednesday, April 8, and Thursday, April 9. I will be staying in the dorms on Wednesday night.

I was wondering if anyone on this board could provide me with some recommendations as to what to do during my visit. I don't know exactly what/how much my overnight host will do with me, so I want to have some plans if I end up on my own. I am already planning to visit some classes and to possibly have lunch in one of the co-ops (if possible), but I've never been to Oberlin. Is there anything else I should do there? Should I sign up to take an official tour, or explore on my own? Should I try to set up meetings with faculty?

(By the way, I'm leaning towards a major in Neuroscience, Biology, or Environmental Studies. I do want to visit an English class while I'm there, however.)

IF you were recently admitted, didn’t your receive the “All Roads Lead to Oberlin” brochure in your acceptance package? That brochure highlights what you can do during the day you visit IF you visit on any of the designated days. The first “All Roads Lead to Oberlin” day is April 10. That’s when we’re visiting. Our whole family of five. Let 'em feed us breakfast, lunch, dinner, have my D sit in on actual classes in the morning, panel discussions in the afternoon. Good time for all.

Yeah, I did get that brochure, but unfortunately I can’t go on any of those days. I also got into Grinnell, so I’m going to Grinnell’s first Admitted Student Reception on April 10 instead of Oberlin. I decided to clump my visits to both schools into one trip in order to save time and money. It will basically be me flying around the Midwest by myself for three days. But yeah, the result is that I can’t go to one of Oberlin’s official days.

See if you can get a science student to give you an informal tour of the science buildings. The formal tours are only offered on Monday and Friday. This is a critical part of the campus for you and an impressive part of the college. Ditto on the art museum.

As a general rule… not so much stuff happens on Wednesday. As a student, this is a good thing, or I’d never get homework done. There’s definitely things to see/do during the day, but less at night. On the events calendar, there’s a men’s lacrosse game (brutal, fun) and an Orchestra Concert (so so good, props to BassDad). I’d…
eat at a co-op
take an exco
rock climbing wall!
go to the art museum
ask a science student to show you around/ask an admissions intern
tours explain the enviro. science building pretty well – mention that you’re a possible major too. we’re doing a bunch of sustainability projects, including an eco-olympics.
walk around Mudd library
Decafe smoothies.
Black River Cafe pancakes.
Mindfair used books inside of Ben Franklin’s.
Movie at Apollo.
Hanging out in the library (rare books on 4th floor is really cool).

Er… all of them? There’s taiko and rock climbing and aikido and swing dancing and Terry Gilliam… Here’s the rub: there’s no standing list of when/where excos meet. Given student schedules, they might shift times through the semester. So, I’d contact the exco’s you’d want to take and see when they meet:

I would strongly strongly strongly recommend having a meal in a co-op if you’re interested in OSCA. We eat lunch at 12:20 and dinner at 6:20, and people generally really like having prospective students come visit. If you have any questions about the co-ops (there are nine of them), feel free to PM me :)

Also, my roommate is a neuro/chem major and a science center tour guide - so if you’d like to talk to a science student and get an informal tour of the facilities, I can pass on her phone/e-mail.

Finally, if you’re into music, there’s an orchestra concert the evening of the 8th that’s going to be pretty awesome.
