Hi OP, did you (or your daughter) check out the Spring course schedule on the Registrar’s web site https://isis.jhu.edu/classes/results.aspx? If she is a history nerb, she may want to sit in on the “History of Occidental Civilization” or the “Occidental Civilization: Moden Europe” classes. Both of these classes meet on Monday, but the class size is small. You may want to email the professors ahead of time to make sure he/she is ok with it. Or check out other classes (listed by department) in subjects that she may also be interested.

Since she will be in campus, did she sign up for interview? Also, join the tour and information session, visit the Admissions Office, eat at the cafe. My daughter is a sophomore at Hopkins. Feel free to ask/PM me if you have any other questions.

my daughter did check out the class schedule (she is one of those types that doesn’t need to be told!)

both of your suggested classes sound interesting. and you are correct to remind me that my daughter needs to email the profs to obtain permission to sit in on the class.

my wife and i will be doing the tour as my daughter sits in on the classes.

which cafe are you speaking of?

lastly, what is your daughter’s major?

again, thank you for being so kind as to share your experiences.

She is probably speaking of Fresh Food Cafe which is where all the freshmen eat all their meals.

On my third trip I finally went to the Baltimore Museum of Art which is on campus and was pleasantly impressed with their holdings. It was free also so might be a nice place to visit while your daughter does other things.

She should definitely do the tour also. It would be good for her to get a students view of the campus.

Can’t help you with classes as my son would run as fast as he can from a history class. If your definition of ‘history’ is very broad :D, I’d recommend ‘Stars and The Universe: Cosmic Evolution’ which is taught by Dr. Riess who is currently a MacArthur ‘genius’ fellow and is highly recommended by students. It is in the physics dept but has no math or science prereqs and I believe is not directed to the science majors.

Hi OP, the cafe that I referred to in my earlier post is called “FFC: Fresh Food Cafe” - it is where all the freshmen go for their meals (since they are all required to be on meal plans). It will be a good place for your daughter to visit so she can have a feel for the students there (to see if she can identify with them - to get the vibe so-to-speak).

My daughter is a neuroscience major. When she visited Hopkins in her HS junior year, she also contacted one of the neuroscience professor ahead of time to set up time to visit with him when she was on campus. Perhaps your daughter may want to consider that as well.

A few things to note about visiting on Monday. It is President’s Day so the volume of visitors is going to be quite high.

If your daughter wants to visit a class she needs to first check in at the front desk of Mason Hall and review our class visit binder. Visiting prospective students are only able to visit classes that have been pre-approved by professors, and only the Admissions office has a record of those classes. Mason Hall opens at 8:30am.

Information sessions will be held at 10am and 1pm and followed by campus tours at 11am and 2pm. The campus tours typically take between 75 to 90 minutes.

As far as lunch, it is probably better if you eat at the food court in Levering Hall as it is located on the south end of campus near Mason Hall and is more accessible than the Fresh Food Cafe. Levering is very busy during lunch time so your daughter will be able to able to see many students.

Enjoy the visit, and enjoy the very cool bag we give to our visitors. Hopefully there will be so fun bluejay SillyBandz left over too.
