Visiting Program for admitted students.

Ok, the class of 2010, here we go.

The visiting program, as you may know, starts at April 22, Saturday.

One question: At what time should I be there? When does the first "event" start?

As I am flying trans-continental flight, I want to have the most bang for the buck. (so expensive to purchase a ticket now.)

You might want to get there on Friday afternoon, as there are lots of fun events on Friday night, like Eleganza (a fashion show) and a party.

I'm planning on arriving by early Friday evening and leaving sometime Monday afternoon, if that's any help. :)

im leaving friday morning and planning to get there at like 4 pm. im from so cal.

AIM - deathmonkey5

lets get to know each other before we go!

I am from so cal too.

Which air line are you using? Tickets are not as cheap as I expected.

I'm flying jet-blue. I'm taking a red eye, and will be arriving early in the morning on Friday.

I have decided that I am going to leave at Friday evening to arrive Saturday morning....too bad I am going to miss the events.

Californiakid...

I actually thought of that...tickets are cheaper that way too, but I dont' think i will be able to do something on Friday. Loitering sounds fun, but I will pass this time.

Have any of you purchased laptop through Harvard?

Yeah, after MIT CPW, I'll be familiar with Cambridge, but I still want to explore the Harvard campus before the events start up. That, and visiting my freshman friends :). (I get to stay with them!)

Miss as much school as possible. You're running out of skippable days! (since you can't skip graduation and all that). Definitely make sure you see a day or two of classes, in addition to a day of weekend fun. I also recommend (if you can) going on a non-prefrosh day (maybe even thursday?) so you can see the campus in its "normal" state.

I wouldn't jump the gun on laptops... especially if you're buying a Mac (which you should!). Apple tends to have back to school specials (they've basically given away an iPod w/ a laptop purchase the past two years).

Why do you think Mac is better?

Also, if you for some reason /can't/ make it in time for Friday, and must arrive on Saturday, it's no biggie -- there are events planned for all three days. You miss the chance to take classes, but in terms of opportunities to meet other prefrosh, current students, etc., you are definitely not out of luck.

and, justforgetme is right --

definitely try to be here on a non-prefrosh day (by coming on thursday or leaving on Monday) so that you can see what the campus is like under normal circumstances, when there aren't 1,000 prefrosh all over the place.

um... so my prom is the 22nd... i might fly in the morning of the 23rd... is it really pointless to come at that point?

Ooh...when are those Apple back-to-school specials out?

Tawny: One day is probably better than no time at all, depending on how sure you are about attending/not attending Harvard.

But you should explore your options. Could you, for example, afford to miss school and stay until Monday or Tuesday?

You should all also keep in mind that prefrosh weekend is NOT the only weekend you can visit. If you have conflicts that weekend you can certainly arrange to stay some other weekend. (You should probably do so before mid-May, though; once Reading Period hits, the campus will be much less fun, and I imagine people would be more hesitant to host any prefrosh while they're stressed about finals.)

Aren't decisions due May 1? Forget so quickly about our last minute deliberiations, saxfreq?

Policymaker, I don't know exactly when Apple will roll out specials (or if they'll even do one this year), but I'd guess that it will happen in the late July/early August time frame. Definitely in time to order your computer + receive it before school starts, since Harvard begins relatively late.

Katerila-I'm not sure this is the place for a big Mac vs. PC debate, and no matter which way you go, Harvard will support your computer. I prefer Macs for a variety of reasons, from the amazing design to the absence of spyware/virii to the UNIX underpinings. I'm sure there's a good article on prefrosh.net about the choice.

Oh, and it's expected that Apple will introduce more laptops with Intel chips before you guys go to school. Right now the only Mac with an Intel chip is the 15'' macbook pro, but 12" and 17" versions are likely coming, as well as an iBook replacement. These computers are faster than current Apple laptops and give you the ability (with some hacking around) to dual boot your computers.

thank you that was helpful

Any CC-ers from 2009 available for a visting days meetup with the 2010 people in Cambridge? I've had one or two people indicate interest in something along this line.

I'm always up for it. Anyone interested in Harvard + in the area (class of '10 or otherwise), please feel free to PM or email me.
