I live in NJ and have cousins in Wisconsin that we visit nearly every summer. I was planning on hitting some schools in the MW while we were there this summer (UW-Madison, Northwestern, Michigan, UIUC, maybe UMinnesota-TC,etc). Is it bad to visit them over the summer? Will there be any students there? Will there be admissions officers there or any tours running?

It’s better than not visiting at all. If you are able to visit during the school year, however, you will get a much better sense of campus. The types of people on each campus are what makes each school unique. The school I’m going to next year wouldn’t have been my top choice had I not visited while students were present. That said, schools make a big effort to show what they’re like, even during summer info sessions. Good luck!

It is much better to visit while classes are in session, to get a sense of what the enrolled students are like. Any chance of visiting schools over your April vacation? April vacation of Junior Year is a good time to visit! Best of luck in your search.

I think summer visits are a great idea for narrowing down your choices. It is a great way to see the layout of the schools, dorms and have department visits. Schools that you like you can then go back to during the school year.
