will it hurt me if i dont visit a school. Ive just requested all of those info packets to schools ive seen already. Is that good enough?

My bro and i went looking 2 years ago so i dont need to go again, but i feel like it may hurt me…any opinions?

eh...it matter how certain you are of your chances....but it wont make or break your application....if anything, order the dvd/video (if the college(s) you are applying to offer them)

How the heck does visiting a school factor into your application?

When you visit a school you usually sign up on line for their session and then sign in when you get there. This puts you in the schools data base as an interested student. Many smaller schools may choose a student who has visited over a similar student because it shows the student has a high interest in their school. I know one school I visited was very careful to bo over their list in my information session and check carefully who was actually there.

I know when I visited schools, I signed in for the tour or information sessions, so I assume they keep those records if for nothing else to send out bulk mailings. I also put on my applications if I visited that college. When they asked what I did over the summer, I would put that I visited that school--or I would casually slip it into my essay..."I realized this through a tour of your campus on such and such a date." Visiting a campus shows that you are serious about that school, and that you've done your research to make sure it's a match for you, and colleges like to know that. If you've already visited these schools, then you should definitely let them know that somewhere on your application.

just put on the application that you visited 2 years ago. you dont have to go again.

Will they know that you visited even if you don't put it on the app (assuming you actually did visit it)? I'm planning to visit in the fall so it wouldn't be considered as a summer acitivity.

Also how much does visiting factor into the apps of top private universities (ivies, stanford...)

Some of the schools ask on your application if you've visited. I believe Stanford asked, I hadn't visited; I didn't get in, but I doubt that was a factor since I'm from NH.

Some schools care a lot about your level of interest. If you visit, or request information, or go to one of the local presentations, or have any contact them; give you social security number for their tracking system. On the other hand, some schools don't care. I have heard that Harvard doesn't track interest because their yield is so high anyway. I have also heard that some schools consider how close you live to the campus. If you live within a couple hundred miles and you don't visit, it can significantly hurt you in some cases. As everything else, it depends on the college.

don't go to a school if you haven't visited...you can apply but do NOT go there if you havent

I know for a fact that Columbia wants students who have shown a genuine interest in them. On their application, one of the questions is, "How has your interest in Columbia developed?" Options include campus visits, college fairs, conversation with alumnus/a or current student, open house program, overnight stay on campus, tour, video, viewbook, website, and others.

Plus, I know for a fact that some schools (like George Washington, for example) keep track of your interest in them by recording information such as how many times you called their admissions office or went for a tour or info session.
