Visiting SUNY Purchase, need travel advice

We are going on a 7 school tour this March and plan to start in NYC, then to SUNY Purchase and finally on to Boston. We are flying in to NYC seeing schools Monday and Tuesday(no car) driving (or taking a train) to Purchase on Wednesday morning (or maybe Tuesday late afternoon) then driving to Boston Wednesday afternoon for days 4-6. I am deciding between renting a car and driving to Purchase for the day then on to Boston OR taking a morning train to Purchase (to make a 10am tour) taxi cab to the school then renting a car from there to drive to Boston. Lots of different options. I would like to stay in NYC Tuesday night but I don’t want to rent the car in NYC until Wednesday morning (parking nightmares.) Not sure how long it will take to get to the car rental place in the city, rent the car and drive to Purchase. (There are plenty of car rental options all over NY.
Has anyone done this trip and if so do you have any suggestions on the best way to do it? Thanks, and sorry for the rambling…

We did the same thing last year but in reverse order. We started in Boston and ended in nyc. We had a rental car in nyc. Our parking was $20 per night via our hotel and we were in the middle of times square. We needed the car to get to the Potsdam audition on long island, to get to the purchase audition in purchase and to get to la guardia (our outbound flight). Plus I got a killer deal on the rental car …$17/day for an suv one way rental (trains and cabs would have been more expensive and inconvenient). I would definitely recommend getting the rental car and driving to and from purchase. It took us about 30-45 minutes to get there and we had one toll road. Good luck and stay safe.

Which Boston schools are you interested in? I’m wondering if you really need a rental car for that leg too. I love taking the train between Boston and NY, although it can be expensive

Sguti40…thanks for the advice. We plan to rent the car early Wednesday morning, drive to Purchase and then return the car Wednesday night in Boston. We will use public transportation to get around NYC and Boston. We considered the train, but its a lot of dragging around luggage. Any other advice about the trip is welcome.

Take the mta Harlem line to white Plains and rent the car there. Then drive to purchase.

We actually did a whole East coast college tour–from Philadelphia to NJ to NYC all the way up to Boston–all done by train/subway. I guess getting up to Purchase would need a car, but the rest is all doable without.

Yeah we had way too much baggage for a train. We took cabs in boston…but ran into a couple shady drivers until our guest house made a recommendation. We were super close to boco. Cab ride there cost $5, cab ride back…$15. Sorry don’t remember the name…but like I said the hotel should have a referral.
