We are going to tOSU this weekend and would love to get any suggestions to get a real feel for the university. We are arriving late on Saturday night and doing the Admitted Student Tour Monday morning and the Engineering Tour Monday early afternoon. Sunday night we are seeing “The Who” on campus. Would love any walking suggestions and/or restaurant suggestions.

Your tours should give you a good feel for campus. Be sure to see Mirror Lake and The Oval, the RPAC. Behind High Street is the off campus housing. Walk up a block or two to see where students live once they leave the dorms (usually sophomore year). Walk up 15th to see the frat and sorority houses.

There are a few places to eat at the South Campus Gateway (Kildare’s isn’t bad). Eddie George’s is there as well. If you have a car, you can head up Lane, past The Schott, into Upper Arlington and eat at the Rusty Bucket. German Village is very charming. You can have really good sandwiches at Katzinger’s. If you like German food definitely try Schmidt’s. The Short North has plenty of restaurants, as well as the Arena District downtown.

Great advice, but if I were you I’d also go ahead and visit the Ohio Union, which has some great on-campus food. As a student, you’d be eating there frequently.

My S is a current freshman and we are from OOS.

Dining suggestions: Highly recommend stopping in at Sloopy’s in The Ohio Union–students eat there, its fun, good “diner” type food and gives you a sense of the kids who attend Ohio State. Try a restaurant in Short North, our favorite is Marcella’s! We send our son Marcella’s gift cards for birthdays, exam time etc. You also can;r visit Columbus without checking out Jenny’s Ice Cream (free samples). This time of year there shouldn’t be a line, but there is always one when the weather is warm.

Agree with previous posters, make sure you see the RPAC, and if your tour does NOT take you to the top of Thompson library, ASK to take the elevator up there–gorgeous view of campus and even into the stadium from there.

As far as restaurants–two that we like to go to are The Cap City Diner at 1299 Olentangy River Road, and Champps at 1827 Olentangy River Road–a good variety of foods–salads, burgers etc. A fun place to go to is The North Market–59 Spruce Street–on the corner of Park and Spruce, one block off High Street, across from the Convention Center. They have lots of individual shops–pizza, crepes, BBQ, Jeni’s ice cream, bakeries, etc–with places set-up to eat–it’s fun. That part of High Street–the Short North–has lots of cute shops.

German Village.off of High Street is a very interesting neighborhood to drive around–old brick roads, cute stores, bakeries, restaurants, etc. I really like going to The Book Loft at 631 Third street–a great place to poke around.

If you are on campus–go to the main library, and go to the reading room on the 11th floor where you get great views of the campus. Stop at the desk on the first floor and get a guide to all of the language tiles. Check out the following link:

I wanted to visit Monday, but the calendar didn’t show an admitted students tour or an engineering session that day…did you set something us yourself?
