Hi, we're visiting on Thursday and are hoping to have breakfast, lunch and dinner on campus before and after our tour. Any great classes to visit? We plan to eat in one of the dining halls for either breakfast or lunch. Any other activities on campus for a prospective student to check out?

There’s a carnival/fair on East Campus on Thursday, starting at 9pm, should be fun

That sounds fun. Is it easy to get a cab on campus that late? I think our hotel shuttle stops at 10pm.

It’s easy to get a cab if you call for one. But you can’t just flag down a cab on campus. If you’re visiting with a parent and staying off campus, I’d recommend renting a car…makes things much easier.

bluedog is a great source of information, but I (parent of recent grad) will disagree here. Forget the cost for a moment: the convenience of avoiding parkiing issues by using a shuttle is great. If the only issue is transportation for one night, get a shuttle to campus and ask your hotel for a card/recommendation for cab service back. (The cost of a one-way trip does not make up for the cost of a rental for the stay. But that is not the only issue.)

No offense taken mafool. You’re certainly free to disagree. I agree with you actually that avoiding parking on campus would be ideal as parking isn’t so friendly for visitors. But you have to take a taxi from the airport each way anyways, which is probably like $50 total. When I visited, I would typically drive to a restaurant or two and some other sites, but perhaps amazhon is planning on staying on campus the whole time. So, if you figure a few more more cab rides @$10-15 each, then that works itself out to ~$90 and renting a car for a couple days is likely cheaper.

Although I suppose you can take a bus from the airport which is pretty cheap, and if your hotel has a shuttle service to the campus, might as well take advantage of it to avoid any parking hassles. In any event, probably won’t make too much of a difference and I guess it depends on where you plan on going during your visit. I just personally would venture to off campus places more when visitors came, so perhaps my experience is different. And, as you said, cost isn’t the only factor to consider. Have fun!

See Duke Theater Studies and Duke Chamber Players’ amazing production of Ragtime in Reynolds auditorium! Show starts at 7:30. My experience with hotel shuttle is they will come to pick you up at Bryan Center after performances there if you arrange in advance, and if not, get cab number from hotel. The show is great!
