Visiting UNC

We are visiting UNC Chapel Hill in April. Any suggestions on where to stay, what to see, what to avoid. We are visiting from the west coast so want to make the most of our time. Interested in Bio Engineering

If you can, try and book a room at the Carolina Inn. It is a beautiful hotel and is located right in the center of campus; plus, they usually have social events there throughout the week that can be quite fun. If you want a particularly pleasant experience for lunch or dinner, check out Top of the Hill, which is located at the intersection of Franklin and Columbia Streets. If the weather is nice, you can get a table on the roof overlooking the activity down below. Definitely walk around the campus, and see if you can get into a campus tour. I’ll try to see if I can think of a few more things for you to do tonight.

Go to Pepper’s on Franklin Street. Probably the best pizza I’ve ever had :)

Another vote for “Top of the Hill” I ate there this past weekend, very yummy. Make sure to visit the Shrunken Head store and get some UNC gear. I just enjoy walking around campus, it is so beautiful. It was really cold last weekend but I bet it will just be gorgous once it warms up and everything goes green for spring.

I absolutely love 411 West on Franklin Street right where Chapel Hill meets Carboro. Its great!

When making reservations at the Carolina Inn make sure they know you are there to tour and visit UNC; they offer special rates for that purpose.

I second the recommendation for 411 West for dinner it’s upscale Italian and may remind you of Northern California cuisine but if you want to have some Southern home style cuisine and a more relaxed atmosphere, Mama Dips is terrific. I highly recommend it.

I also really like Spanky’s (directly across Franklin St from Top of the Hill) for lunch; great sandwiches and soups and the wall art is all of Carolina sports legends and coaches.

Another great spot for lunch is The Weathervane which is located in A Southern Season which is one of the most amazing gourmet food stores IU have ever seen anywhere.

Pepper’s is NY style pizza and was our favorite spot for pizza in Chapel Hill.

Here’s a review of a number of great places for all meals:

If you have the time, touring the Carolina Basketball Hall of Fame (in the Dean Dome) is pretty special.

Bring umbrellas to be safe and very comfortable shoes-the campus is spread out and hilly.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your time in “Blue Heaven”

Sounds great. If you think of anything else, please let me know. Do you, did you, go to UNC? If so what is/was your major? Any knowledge of the Bio-Engineering field at the school?
Thanks for the input

Ya know… I used to hype Crook’s Corner but I felt kinda ripped off the last couple times I’ve been there.

My musts:
Breadman’s and Elmo’s (breakfast)
Mama Dip’s (EAT THE CHOCOLATE CAKE)
India Palace and Gourmet Kingdom (Indian and Chinese respectively, both authentic and really good… India Palace > Mint any day, and it’s cheaper)
Italian Pizzaria 3 (cheap. good.)
Carrburritos

Trying to think of other places…It’s pretty hard to go wrong. Except I’m not a huge fan of Spanky’s, but I’m also a vegetarian so I bet their food is pretty good if you eat meat.

cloying

I agree about Crook’s Corner which is why I didn’t list them. I thought the food outside of their shrimp and grits was nothing special and certainly not worthy of the wait on busy occasions like Family weekend, game days or commencement.

Agree completely on Elmos and Breadman’s for breakfront/brunch and almost added Mill Town but since it is more of a bar/restaurant with emphasis on it’s beer selection I wasn’t sure about recommending it to families with HS seniors visiting.

I think Top O is okay but certainly not the best food in CH…the patio is certainly a fun place though…not a “must see” on a first visit but certainly a place to try with your family over one’s time on the Hill.

And Ive never had a bad dessert at Mama Dips…;)

^ Correction. Do not get the cookies at Mama Dip’s. I had them last time and they were not very good a all! I knew I should’ve gotten apple pie, instead.

^ Never tried a cookie there other things were too tempting…

With the amazing selection of cakes and pies (especially the sweet potato and pecan pie) that they usually offer why would you even want a cookie? :)

My eating suggestions (this is all fast food type stuff, so keep that in mind):
Mediterranean Deli
Cosmic Cantina
BSki’s
Pita Pit

Also, if it’s not too cold, you might want to stop by Locopops and/or the Yogurt Pump!

It is never too cold for Locopops or the Yogurt Pump. Just saying.

Except that locopops is closed during the winter!

Seriously? That’s crazy.

I don’t think they are closed now, but the hours right now are only from 12-5.

eadad: I don’t know what I was thinking, either. We were in a rush, so I just thought a cookie would be a nice, portable dessert.

Suggest you contact the Director of Undergrad Studies in the Applied Sciences department (as you probably know, UNC doesn’t have an engineering “school”). Depending on schedule, you can probably meet with him or someone else in the department and visit the lab. You should be able to track him down through the UNC website. Good luck!

That’s what I thought.

OP, and if you want suggestions for a good sit down place…Lime and Basil is excellent! I can’t believe nobody has mentioned it!

I know everyone is saying to stay at the Carolina Inn, but when we went to UNC about a week ago it was completely booked. We opted to stay at the Sheraton instead, it’s insanely nice, but if more than 3 people will be staying in the room, I recommend getting 2 rooms. It’s about $140ish a night but the parking is no problem and it’s a 5 minute or less drive to Carolina.

The Marriot residence inn is good, too.
