Visiting UVa

Visiting UVa tomorrow for their information session/tour...any inside tips I should know? It starts at 1:15, so we'll probably head up early for lunch (any good places to eat I should know about?).

Thanks all.

Definitely come early! When many schools are on spring break, it can take a while to get into the parking garage. The garage at Emmet & Ivy Roads is free this week. The pay garage is the central grounds parking garage. You got this info in your confirmation email, of course. :)

You’ll probably want to eat on the Corner. That is the shopping district next to the University (about a 2 minute walk from the Rotunda). Some solid options:

Sandwiches - Bodo’s Bagels, Take it Away (personal fav, get the house dressing)
Burgers - Boylan Heights (I like to order via ScanTron)
Soups & wraps - Revolutionary Soup

All of those have vegetarian options. Some of us also like Sushi Love, Basil, and Michael’s Bistro.

Thanks Dean J, sounds great!

Mmmmmm dumplings

Oh now I’m starving guys, thanks a lot!!! Take it away is amazing and Dean J’s right, the house dressing is phenomenal! The Dumpling place is right next to it. Boylan’s has a great salad, the Spanish Club, that I’ve tried to replicate with no luck. It’s the chipotle ranch dressing. They also have a red velvet milk shake, it’s sinful.

No matter where you eat, give yourself time to walk down the Corner and look in Mincer’s or the The Student Book Store. They have a different variety of UVa garb and sometimes better prices depending on what you’re looking for. The UVa bookstore always has things on sale too. Tomorrow’s supposed to be mid 50’s and sunny so you have a beautiful day to visit. Have a wonderful time! :)

Ooh-DD loves red velvet so we are going to have to check that out on Sunday when we start our visit! We’re also looking for a good place for Sunday brunch. Any suggestions? :)

Thanks blueiguana, will do!

It is that time of year so I’ll dust off the restaurant meta-thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-virginia/1122511-restaurants-cville.html?</a></p>

There should be some suggestions for brunch. I believe Horse and Hound is mentioned. I haven’t been but have heard good things. Charlottesville is full of wonderful restaurants to fit every taste and budget.

If you are interested in a particularly major, you might look up where their facilities are located. If those facilities are not on the tour, you might try to see those facilities for yourself afterwards.

Excellent point Charlie. While S2s interactions w admissions were excellent, after he matriculated his dealings have been with his department office, the registrar, etc. We stopped by Thornton Hall during one pre admission visit as he had some questions. Watching how students were treated as he waited his turn, the patience they were afforded and the obvious knowledge base the staff had, the willingness the staff had to speak to and answer questions for a prospective student was very impressive. They asked if S2 would like to speak with a professor. With a phone call, ten minute wait, and no appointment, a professor in S2s intended major met with him, not for a sales pitch, but to talk to him, listen and answer questions, and really get S2 thinking about what he wanted to do in school. He spent close to an hour with him. It really made an impression on S2. Since then every interaction with the staff at Thornton has never failed to deliver. They are always helpful and know the answer to everything you could think of related to SEAS.

Great information. We will be on campus 4/19 for DOTL. Would love to meet with someone in MechE when we’re down there - is that something that should be set up prior to going down, or just stop in the office once down there - or will there be faculty from SEAS at DOTL to talk as well? Thx.

GRP: the e-school holds tours daily and on Saturdays as well. While I was a guide and might be bias, I think they’re better than the overall/main Grounds tour. It’s run by SEAS students and we talk about everything and anything e-school (the different majors, first year classes, typical schoolday/workload, go through the various buildings, etc) and are happy to answer any other questions too (first year dorms, food, Grounds, etc). It’s a much, much more personal tour since there’s anywhere from a few families to a group of 15-20. On DOTL they staff extra guides to keep the groups smaller and more manageable so that everyone has a chance to ask questions.

Please please look into going on a SEAS tour!! We go right through (or at least used to) the MechE building and give lots of details on the labs/research! We can also point you to the right faculty or SEAS staff/resource to talk to :)

SEAS tours: [U.Va</a>. Engineering Touring the School](http://seas.virginia.edu/about/tour.php) 1pm on weekdays. You may want to call ahead and ask about DOTL schedule, I think we may have offered 11am tours too

Thanks for all of the advice and recommendations everyone! About to leave now, will report back with how I like it! :)

Just got back; loved it all! The tour was great, and I really enjoyed seeing the campus and student life…the students seemed to be full of school spirit and camaraderie!

Just don’t forget … it is “The Grounds” not the “campus”. If you forget, you will be corrected each time. (smirk)

Oh right, forgot. The Grounds were spectacular. Mr. Jefferson would be proud of his university today.

The only thing prettier than grounds this time of year is the lawn lit up for christmas. Google it and you will see pictures.

Wow, that is incredibly pretty!

…or when blanketed by snow early enough in the evening for the sunset glow to be fading and the lights to be shining in the Pavilions… I love the whole lighting of the Lawn tradition. There is something magical about the Lawn in general no matter the time of year or the weather though… the serpentine walls completely charm me, as well.
