Visiting Vanderbilt this weekend

My son and I will be visiting Vanderbilt this weekend for a tour and info session. Does anyone have any suggestions of things to see/do this weekend while we're there or favorite restaurants near campus to eat at?

Jacks Bar-B-Que downtown on Broadway, The cafe (Grins) in the Hillel is very good, try the apple/peanut butter wrap, to die for. Have a good time its a great school and Nashville is a lot of fun. My son says that the place (shack) behind Chilis on West End is really the best Bar-b-Que.

Definitely do breakfast at the Pancake Pantry on 21st Ave. Go early if you can though. My friend and I went a few weeks ago at 8:30 am and still had to wait about 15-20 minutes in the line.

How close is Pancake Pantry to campus and do you think we could get in quickly on a weekday at 7:30 or so????

im a senior in hs this year but when i visited over spring break last school year we went to the Pancake Pantry too and it was awesome..

its literally no more than a 3 or 4 minute walk from campus as I remember... just a couple of streets

as i recall, thats not too busy of a time, its definitely worth it either way though.

enjoy!

If you like country music, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless are performing on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium (1.5 miles from campus) Friday and Saturday night. I can almost hear a collective groan but the Ryman is the original venue for the Opry and it is a fun (sometimes hokey) great music show. Pancake Pantry is great. You could get breakfast at Noshville too-look at student dining options, Taste of Nashville, to look at other restaurants on the card.

One of my favorite attractions for a first-time visitor is the park downtown that has the giant map of Tennessee with fountains and a "history walk" around the grounds with major events in Tennessee's timeline commemorated on granite markers. I forgot what it is called, but it is not too far from campus.

I'd suggest you try to get him hooked up with a place to stay overnight on Campus, with a student (or at least someone from his HS). Then let him eat there and do his thing with the students there and get a real feeling for what it's like being a Vandy student. While you go back to the hotel or see a movie.

There'll be plenty of time for both of you to do things in Nashville if he decides he likes the campus and gets in. That's the real reason for the visit.

Thanks, everyone, for the great suggestions. We're looking forward to it!
