Hello all, taking my d via Amtrak Cresent to visit this week -- we want her to visit again before finalizing her decision ( she is certain it is Clemson). Question for anyone who has used the train - I know it gets in at 530, what are the transportation options? I was thinking of getting breakfast to kill some time, any suggestions? Is the train usually on time for heading back up north, from what I have read online the Amtrak station is not a place to be at night so any information or experiences would be welcome. Lastly, any ideas of places on or off campus that would be good to visit. I am not use to not have a car to come and go and want to make sure I have some options since the we will be there from 530 am til 10pm. Pierre ---- your feedback would be helpful... Thanks

Hey srodier, I’ve taken the train numerous times (well until I got my car junior year!). The transportation options from the station aren’t really that great for 5:30 AM. There is a bus that goes to the Amtrak Station from campus but it doesn’t start running until 7 AM (why they didn’t consider people who take the train early idk) - anyways here’s their schedule: http://www.catbus.com/home/red.html . When I went to orientation, I walked from the train station to campus (about a mile with all my luggage - I don’t recommend it but it’s not terrible). You can definitely catch the bus though for the way back.

In terms of breakfast - Waffle House is right down the street from the Amtrak Station - only place I can think of that would be open that early in the morning.

I don’t know if I’m a naive college kid but I thought the Amtrak station waiting room wasn’t that bad (most other people hate it) - I mean it’s a place to sit and there’s free wifi so no complaints from me. The Amtrak train is 50/50 when it comes to being on schedule. It’s either right on the money…or 1.5-2 hours late. (Amtrak website says official stat for the Crescent route is 59.7% on time).

As for places to visit on-campus, the campus tour will mostly cover that but check out Death Valley/Littlejohn Coliseum, Scroll of Honor, Military Plaza, South Carolina Botanical Gardens and check if there’s a baseball game at Doug Kingsmore. As for places to eat, definitely check out the dining halls but if you are looking for something off campus look at Todaro’s, Pot Belly Deli, Brioso’s. It’s a shame you won’t have a car since Smokin’ Pig is awesome.

Think that covers all of your questions!

Thanks Pierre
I wish I would have a car as well however when we visited last spring the PA to SC drive limited our time at the campus so I thought we would give this a try. I’ll let u know how it works out.

If you want a cab, there’s one cab company in the area. Yellow Cab is 864-882-3454.

thanks
