We are from the mountain west and will be visiting Lehigh (and Lafayette) this summer. Are there some places you would recommend that we eat in Bethlehem to get a feel for the town? Maybe someplace good for dinner or an afternoon snack?

In South Bethlehem (where Lehigh is), one of the best restaurants is Blue Sky Cafe, though it is mostly a breakfast and lunch place. The Goosey Gander (also only lunch) is the best deli and La Lupita has the best Mexican food with great beef tongue tacos. Avoid General Zapata’s at all costs, on the other hand. Nawab has acceptable but not great Indian food.

In North Bethlehem, the Brew Works is good but I would prefer Apollo Grill or Thai Thai.

Beyond that, Bolete is two miles from Lehigh and is probably the best restaurant in the Lehigh Valley. It is a farm to table restaurant with some of the best food I have ever eaten. Blue is a steakhouse a few miles to the north of Lehigh and is also great. Finally, check out the Promenade Shops over the mountain from Lehigh. Two great restaurants there are Melt for Italian and Kome for Japanese.

I agree with Sal’s, Johnny’s and add Starters. It depends on what type of meal and atmosphere you are looking for. Starters is a sports bar so pub food, Sal’s is a small mom and pop BYO cozy Italian restaurant with good food and Johnny’s is a real campus grab a sandwich /grill food type of place. If I were going for lunch I would pick Johnny’s if it was for dinner depending if I wanted Pub food or Italian is how I would choose. I think these three would give you the feel of the places the students wind up going during the year.
