I might have to visit without them, or else I couldn't visit until late Feb or March, which I don't want to do. I'm guessing the best thing to do is to fly into Houston, correct? Would I have to take a taxi to College Station? Or a bus? I'd like to stay overnight with a student. Is that possible?

There is an airport in college station but yes u can take greyhound from houston to CS

I assume you are OOS. There are shuttle between Houston airports and CS Easterwood Airport. Check the link above. There is no shuttle between Austin and Dallas. Best wishes.

Is the CS airport really close to campus? Or would I need another ride from there?

From the Easterwood airport web site:
Q. Is there a shuttle service to the campus?
A. Taxicabs are available to transport passengers from either the
commercial terminal or the general aviation terminal. There is not a
shuttle service available at this time.

Q. How far is it to the Texas A&M campus?
A. The airport is located on the west side of the campus property. It is
approximately two miles from the airport to the center of campus.

It may only be two miles from campus, but its on the opposite side of state highway 2818 where the speed limit is 60 mph. You’ll need to arrange a ride. Since its such a short distance, Maroon Cab would probably be an affordable option.
