First time in Cincinnati! Any suggestions on what to do while we’re in town would be appreciated.
If you are looking to stay somewhat near XU, the Rookwood area (Smith / Edwards Rd exit off of I71) has a fair number of restaurants and shopping. A little further north in Kenwood (Montgomery Rd exit off I71) is probably the most upscale mall and mid to upper priced (mostly) chain restaurants in the area. There is also a unique constellation of restaurants and nightlife in Over the Rhine, which is south of XU downtown. If you’re in town during baseball season it would be fun to catch a game, ride the street car, and eat someplace in Over the Rhine or The Banks (the area right next to the baseball stadium). If you’re not into baseball, the Zoo is nice. Or you could check the Playhouse in the Park (in Mt. Adams, a neighborhood just east of downtown), Music Hall, or the Aronoff Center (downtown) to see what shows might be going while youre in town. Some restaurants Cincinnati is known for are Jeff Ruby’s or The Precinct (both really expensive), or more reasonably priced Montgomery Inn, Taste of Belgium, Eagle OTR, Skyline Chili (an acquired taste for most out of towners, but locals love it). Also known for Graeters Ice Cream (several locations all over town). If you have more questions, feel free to send me a private message. Have fun!
@wustl93 – We absolutely loved touring Cincinnati! What a great city! We ate at OTR several times, enjoyed the views at Mt. Adams, had a 3-way at Skyline Chili in the Gaslight District, brunch at Taste of Belgium, walked across the bridge to Kentucky and even did a roadtrip to Madison, Indiana! 3 states before 3 pm! Unfortunately Xavier wasn’t a great fit but we sure enjoyed exploring!
@go2mom I’m so glad you enjoyed Cincinnati! Sorry you didn’t find Xavier a fit. We are going to attend one of their junior visit programs next month to see if it fits S18. Even though we’re local, we don’t know a whole lot about XU. Good luck with the rest of your college search!
We just got back from a visit, the last of our son’s final three schools. He has to decide in the next week or so and we think it’s XU! But if Xavier’s not the fit for yours, go2mom, yet you liked Cincinnati, what about UC or Miami? Our oldest graduates from Miami in June and he’s had a great four years, couldn’t have asked for better, and it was all about fit for him too. Plus, there is a Cincinnati area academic collaborative - if you go to UC you can cross-register for courses at Miami or Xavier if a course you want isn’t at UC, etc.
Just a note - he picked Xavier! It came down to Mizzou, Iowa, and XU - Xavier was the right fit. Much less nonsense than the big state U’s, which are fine schools, but too many distractions for our guy. On the other hand, he has Cincinnati to check out over the next four years. All For One!
Congrats @ericd1112 . I hope your son loves XU and enjoys the Cincinnati area.
