Visiting?

I’m planning to visit Ithaca in a few weeks, and I’ve been poking around their website but haven’t found any sort of performing arts info session (like some schools do) or anything specific to theater/MT when it comes to tours. What do you suggest doing and/or seeing to get a feel for the program? I was hoping to catch a show— they’re doing Much Ado when I’ll be there— but I don’t know if a general school tour and info session plus a show is enough to really get a sense of the MT program, especially since a BFA at a school like Ithaca is so specific in courses, environment, etc. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

I was there last month and no, they don’t have a performing arts session. My advice to you is to tell them right when you arrive that you’re interested in theater and they’ll put you with the tour guide who knows the most (mine was a vocal performance major, but he was able to tell me about the program). Then when you get back to the visitor’s center, ask the students if they know anyone you can get in touch with to ask questions, etc. I hope this helped!

I would contact the theater department and see if they would let you observe some classes or speak with students after a class. Usually they will at least let you watch a dance class.

So delayed, but thank you both for your suggestions! I ended up just calling the department, and to my pleasant surprise, they do offer specific theatre tours. It was a one-on-one conversation with a faculty member about the MT program, curriculum, auditions, etc., and tour of the (brand new!) theatre building with a student. Didn’t get to see a class. Still, really helpful!

Throughout my junior year full of visits, I’ve learned it’s almost always best to just call!
