Visits planned?

My daughter and I will be visiting on 2/9. Anyone else?

sorry no one has replied to you. I hope you enjoy your visit. Are you staying overnight?

Thanks for the reply. No offense taken (even though it WAS a little lonely hanging out there with no responses). Must be a quiet visiting weekend. We are staying overnight and will be taking in a dance performance. If you think of any "must-sees" let me know! I'm looking forward to a little mini-vacation with my d.

I think the issue is more the school is so small we just don't get the traffic here that other larger schools do.

As far as must-sees, like I said, it's a small school; you'll see it all pretty much if you're there for a day. But, don't miss the fitness center... it's pretty spectacular. Daughter has been there every day this term (motivated by a trip to the Dominican Republic in four weeks).

I am glad you are seeing the dance peformance. I believe it is the master choreographer's showcase, and should feature some great performances.

One fun thing to do is go to the famrer's market at the fairgorunds. It is less than a mile from campus, and features and old fashioned hamburger stands, fresh produce and amish baked goods, with other interesting ethnic foods. It is open til around 1 pm on Saturdays.

Have fun!

Just got back yesterday from 2 day visit with junior daughter. Reallly like the Hilton Gardens on airport road in Bethlehem. Just 10 minute ride.

Is this your first visit to campus?
Panera Bread a popular spot in CVS shopping center.
Wegman's Market ( we don't have one near us-is worth visiting)

Lehigh Valley Mall if that interests you - I haven't been there, but it is a place to know about, they have a new Promenade expansion which recently opened.

Nearest Movie theaters are past Wegmans, although daughter says that nicer movie theaters are on Airport Rd, near Bethlehem......

PM if you would more info

Speaking of the expansion at Lehigh Valley Mall....there is a new Italian restaurant there called Bravo, I believe. It is really nice.

Anothermom-good suggestion about the Farmers Market-will definitely get there on another visit. Do you know when it is open?

Japanese restaurant -Teppan -highly recommend-daughter has been, upscale atmosphere.

Anothermom- I saw the Bravo sign from Rte 22 (coming and going from Hilton Garden Inn), and asked my D about it. She hasn't been there yet.

Her fav Italian restaurant is Carabo's- shrimp appetizer -very large could be meal.

If you don't have a Panerra near you, do go there, wonderful atmosphere, great food, high on the 'berg student list of places to eat.

The campus is small, so it is wise to find out what is in surrounding areas.

Thanks all, I'll definitely print out this thread. I'll be looking for ways to spend my time while my d is occupied with dance auditions, so these ideas and suggestions are great.

jasmom- do let us know how your visit goes, and what you think of the 'berg and area! Hope you have fun.

Jasmom: We will be attending the Master's Choreographers with our daughter on Sat. evening. She applied RD to Muhlenberg and she is a dancer as well.

pl, sent you a PM. Perhaps we'll meet.

Hi jasmom. Unfortunately our D couldn't be there tomorrow for the dance auditions, so we went yesterday. She took a ballet class, presented her solo, had a short interview with the head of the dance department, and then also went to admissions for an interview there which she had not done yet. She loves the school, loved the dance class, really liked Karen Dearborn. Now we just wait until the end of March. Seems like forever! We wanted to stay for the choreographer show, but we are too far away and she had to be at school this morning. Hope your daughter enjoys her day!

I believe the farmer's market is open Thurs through Sat, in the mornings. There are venders who sell cheese there, as well as several bakeries, fresh produce and trinkets. It's a fun diversion, and inexpensive. My D went there regularly enough last year that the waitresses at the hamburger stand would ask if she wanted the usual.

We have Panera here too, and it is a family favorite. In fact last summer when we drove across the country we were always happy when we stopped in small towns in the middle of the country and found a familiar favorite!

updates anyone?

My daughter and I had a lovely visit to Mulenberg this past weekend. I was not nearly as mobile as I had anticipated--the day was chilly and rainy, and I had lucked into a parking space in the circle (so was reluctant to move the car without a compelling reason to do so). So while my daughter was auditioning, I hung out with coffee and a book in the lovely student center and/or the Arts Pavilion.
My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the audition. She thought the ballet class moved quicker than most with some interesting and demanding combinations. The contemporary class had some West African elements which she also enjoyed. She drew an early solo audition slot which allowed her to catch her breath after classes but not so much time that she got nervous. In general, she found faculty and students friendly and very accomodating.
She and I found the Mall and passed some time checking out coat sales.
Surprisingly, we ran into long lost dance acquaintances and had fun catching up over dinner.
The Masters Choreographers program was nothing short of stunning! The facility was beautiful, costumes creative/gorgeous, lighting/lighting design was dead on. The choreography was truly masterful--artistic, varied, involving. Really...some of the best I've seen anywhere! The dancers were up to the challenge. Many weren't technically perfect, but they were all wonderful movers who understood and communicated the emotions of each piece.
I was delighted to meet a CC family there (who knows, our daughters may end up at Muhlenberg). I was left with the impression of a very wholistic, student centered educational environment. It's clear that arts are valued there and taken very seriously.

jasmom - I truly appreciate your report. I've heard good things about the dance program, but since my daughter was not a dancer, it's hard for me to judge. She does love her dance classes and teacher! She was in Beginning Ballet first semester, and her teacher recommended she move up to Intermediate Ballet this term (she is a quick learner). She's also taking Beginning Jazz this term, and like I said, she loves her dance classes (too bad she lost a ballet shoe and had to order a new pair -Zappos is fantastic for free overnight shipping!).

She attended the Masters Choreographers program Saturday afternoon and said it was amazing.

Also, I will add that parking in the circle is not that difficult when you're a visitor, unless you arrive as some performance at Trexler is going on. We've never had a problem parking there.

I'm heading out there this Thursday to surprise my daughter for her birthday on Friday, and will come home Saturday. I've used a couple of her friends as spies for me to make the surprise work; I'm just looking forward to seeing her as she won't be coming home for spring break, and although she was cast in the Vagina Monologues (third tier production?), it is being performed while my husband and I are in Ireland. So this may be the only time I see her until May!

Yes, the arts are valued there; I think I heard the theatre and dance department is the second highest funded department on campus (sciences are probably first with all their pre-med majors).

wonderful 'berg reports- enjoyed reading the updates
thanks

Our daughter coudn't make the dance audition day on Saturday, so we took her last Thursday. She took a ballet class with Karen Dearborn, head of dance, then presented her solo and had a short interview. There were two other girls also auditioning, one for dance and one appeared to be theatre since she was going around with Charlie Richter. D loved the ballet class and Prof. Dearborn. Thought it was challenging but not overwhelming, and that Prof. Dearborn was friendly and she enjoyed the interview, even though D is very shy. Next we went to admissions and she had an interview there since she had not had that opportunity on the open house day in the fall. She also enjoyed that interview and felt the woman who interviewed her was very nice. We couldn't stay for the Choreography show, since we live too far away and she had to be in school the next morning, but I wish we could have! We did see Urinetown there last year when older D was looking at Muhlenberg for MT. Loved it! So I'm sure the dance show was also great!
Muhlenberg is VERY high on D's list! Just waiting for scholarship information and Dana Associates results.

^^^ good luck with scholarship info Nydancemom-hope it all works out
