Will be visiting Durham, but will only be able to stay there for one night (Saturday). I was wondering if anyone could provide recommendations of the best places/things to do in the area.

May I recommend you research this topic in CC’s Duke forum; it has been asked – and thoroughly answered – several times in recent years. Obviously, there’s little use in participants reiterating what they have already graciously provided.

You will be obviously visiting Duke? Explore the campus and google best eating joints near it. There is a cool old factory turned into shopping/eating complex near East Campus. If having extra time I would drive to Chapel Hill and walk along Franklin Street. Wonderful opportunities outside of the triangle area, but for this you need time :)

Thanks Kelowna – I am looking at Duke for grad school and will be in the area. Unfortunately, I won’t have a car – basically just plan on staying in a hotel near campus and then taking a cab to airport. I also wish I had more time, but my work schedule is very hectic.

How is 9th street? Is that where the main nightlife is? I will definitely check out the old factory and I appreciate the recommendation.

As a grad you are not going to be near 9th street as is it just next to East Campus (freshman quarters) . I do not know how much night life is going on over there. But definitely some good places to eat, also Whole Foods Market and recently opened , the one I can never remember the name of, but it is right there on 9th. Make sure you walk through the Gardens! From what I am hearing, Duke is famous for night life, you just have to get to know the right crowd. Definitely not a big city life nearby There is a free shuttle connecting Duke with UNC and Franklin street.

Thanks Kelowna - at the very least I am looking forward to seeing the campus and the cool architecture of the buildings.

Well, east campus is pretty easily reached by shuttle bus from west and central campus (just a few minutes ride and bus service is frequent during the day). There are some very good restaurants in the area and the downtown restaurant/club scene is getting better and better (or least that is what I am led to believe).

Thanks for the links – I will definitely check out one of those restaurants.
