Visual and Performing Arts Requirement

My son is very interested in Berkeley. We visited this past Spring and he'll be applying within the month. Somehow we missed seeing this VPA requirement til just this minute. He's comp science/math/physics oriented and hasn't taken music since middle school. We'll be calling the Admissions office about this, but wondered how other OOS's may have handled this. Could he do a second semester art or music class and then a CC class over the summer to equal a year? THanks.

probably a single cc class should do if it is taken on the semester system..although i find this strange b/c i thought HSs were for the most part starting to require their students to take some kind of VAPA (maybe this is just CA though)
at any rate, if all else fails just explain the reason your son wasnt able to fulfill the "G" requirement in the end of the UC app where there is space for additional info

You are not UC eligible without completing A-G. I would sign up for an Art class at a CC and see if that is good enough. If not take two. I'd call admissions to confer what they would accept. But I was told no exceptions if not completed.

Okay--thanks. I"ll call today. No there's no HS art/music requirement for our county.

A CC semester counts for a year in A-G.
I took a semester of Ceramics in a CC one summer, and that was enough to satisfy the VPA and A-G requirements.

The only problem with the whole "taking a semester of art at a CC to get credit for a year of art for high school for the A-G requirements" is that you have to absolutely make sure that the class is accepted. Not all courses are accepted under UC standards, even if it is absolutely a "real" art course. I would make sure through UC Berkeley office personnel that the class you want to take will satisfy this, especially since your son is out-of-state.

Okay, thanks very much, Bigaus. I'm not sure that we'll be able to verify this, based on the rather vague advice I received when I called (basically, just try to match it to one on the list and then we'll consider the application package). I think we'll get his CG to check, too.
