What is the art department like at Haverford? D. is particularly interested in painting and drawing, though probably not as a major.

Hmmm. Well, I haven't had the opportunity to take an art class, but I do know of a few people who have. Haverford is currently in the process of making major additions to the campus (part of a long-term plan to actually expand the size of the college to nearly 1500 students over the next 20 years). We have a new athletic center to be completed next November, a new dorm in the planning, and rumors of a new integrated arts center. So, Haverford is making the arts a major focus poiint over the next decades.

I've heard many of the art classes here are excellent, but graded fairly hardly. Most criticism for the art department comes from the course offerings/times/professors. Most art classes are offered in three hour time slots (I believe roughly 9:30-12:30? but don't hold me to that)...so it's EXTREMELY difficult to fit the classes into your schedule, as that time period is when most classes are offered on MWF. In addition, I've heard complaints that professors only want you taking art courses if you're VERY serious about the subject (e.i. for us science majors who are looking for just a creative outlet, there aren't many art classes designed for those interested in a more casual course). Outside of that, Bryn Mawr has a theatre department and, from what I've heard, an excellent Art History class (which Haverford students are, of course, welcome to take).

all intro art classes are 8:30-11:30 making them nearly impossible to take if you are enrolled in intro level classes in other departments (most are 9:30-10:30). i don't believe a minor in fine arts exists. if you daughter is considering taking drawing or painting she's going to have to wait until she gets her intro courses out of the way.

if anyone is considering going to haverford to study fine arts exclusively, it would be a waste of time and money. our art facilities are diminutive and obsolete, Swarthmore's are far superior. Bryn Mawr has an excellent histroy of art program as matt mentioned earlier and many haverford students major there. the intro classes are offered at more reasonable times but many have very limited enrollments. it might be difficult to get into without pre-registering. (i actually got into an Intro Film class though without doing so. . .)
