Visual Arts Major, Graphic Design

Hi! First post here. :) I'm an international student applying for admissions next year. I plan on doing a visual arts - more specifically, graphic/communication design - major at undergraduate school, but I'm thinking of going to a typical university/college instead of a specialized art school, so I'd have more freedom to pursue double majors or possibly even a double degree.

I know of: Brown University (Brown-RISD Dual Degree Program), Wash U in St. Louis, Boston U, Tufts.

I've also heard of the program at UPenn (any advice on what it's like?).

Are the visual arts programs at Cornell and Duke any good? What other unis would you recommend?

Thanks so much for your time :)

Check out Carnegie Mellon and Syracuse.

totally listen to drae,
and more people would answer you regarding graphic design at universities and possibilities of double majoring BFA BA etc. I just know if you do BFA there is not much room left for anything else.
how far international are you?
here is an international student had hard time at Duke. I assume it was fine art, but just so you know.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/914795-transfer-risd-duke-university.html</a>
Being international makes it hard to get to know / make your folks pay for the schools without “name” which Duke or RISD got.
If internet search is the only tool you got, I am sorry but read up this thread, other student review sites, look at google map and local chamber of commerce to see what’s around in the neighborhood, crime rate, racial balance, ethnic food availability, how hot or cold it get winter and summer.
You really can not tell what makes you miserable until it slowly gets to you.

[Top 10 Graphic Design Schools Ranked](<a href=“GoDaddy Corporate Domains - Protected”>GoDaddy Corporate Domains - Protected)

This list has a number of universities with very great graphic design programs.

I think it would be important to consider what other major you might want to venture into.
At least what field?

Plus, it would give others here a little more information to work with.

Thanks for the help so far guys  I was thinking of majoring perhaps in business or economics (apart from GD).

As for the International part, I’m from Singapore. :)

Hi

Cornell does not have Graphic Design Major.

Tufts combines with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and I don’t think they have Graphic Design (more of a Fine Arts school).

I don’t know much about Duke.

This is a good list so far:

• Brown/RISD (hardest to get into and takes 5 years)
• Wash U. in St. Louis offers a Dual Degree [Combined Studies | Sam Fox School](http://samfoxschool.wustl.edu/node/4158)
• Carnegie lets you double major in economics but not w/ Tepper School of Business ([BXA Interdisciplinary Degree Programs — Carnegie Mellon University](BXA Intercollege Degree Programs - BXA Intercollege Degree Programs - Carnegie Mellon University))
• Boston U lets you Double Major. It may take 5 years; [Boston University College of Fine Arts](http://www.bu.edu/cfa/resources/specialprograms/)
• Syracuse will let you do a minor
• U of Penn will let you Double Major

How about CalArts?
It’s a really good Art school. You should look into it. It has a great Visual Arts program!
Carnegie Mellon Uni has a great Communication Design program.
Good luck!
