Visual Arts portfolio, feedback?

Hii, so I'm going for visual arts in college and maybe taking some science courses on the side. But the thing is, it was only recently that I chose not to focus on science and I took up art only last year. I've never taken any art classes prior to my AP studio art course, which means I didn't enter any contests (therefore no awards..)
And I have no idea what is considered a good standard for art, so please take a look at my pieces and see if they are strong enough for me to actually submit into my portfolio.
(I am not going to apply to RISD or any intense art school, but maybe a really good academic college with a small arts program)

i would appreciate any feedback!

You’re off to a good start. If you’re planning on applying to LACs or universities with strong BA art programs, chances are you won’t initially need a portfolio at all (although you might at some point in the course of your studies). Any of their BFA programs would require one, however. Otherwise, a few quick things about your work: it would be good to have a self-portrait, any style, any medium. Include only your best hand study (just one). Also, not a great idea to include work created directly from a photograph, as most of the work of translating three dimensions into two has been done for you by the camera. Watch your proportions (as in Marilyn) for realistic images. Overall, you’ll need more to work with for a portfolio, but the quality is there. Good luck!

Don’t worry about the art contests. My daughter has an aversion to competitions and would never enter anything anywhere so she didn’t win any awards either, but she got into all the art schools she applied to (except Cooper Union) and I expect she would have had no trouble at all with any non-art school type colleges. Syracuse has a very good art program as does RIT and I’m sure there are lots of other schools around with good art programs too. Those are just the ones that I personlly visited with one kid or another.

Do you know about National Portfolio Review Day?

My D only entered the local art fairs thru school, and won a few ribbons. She did not enter any of the national competitions. She got into all three art schools she applied to and is currently at MCAD in Minnesota.

Thank you for all of your feedbacks! However I changed my top choices to UC schools so I don’t think I would need to submit an arts supplement. But I really appreciate your comments:)

@Glutenmom ; I didn’t know about the National Portfolio Review Day until 5 minutes ago, after searching it up. Thanks, I will look into it but I doubt I will be going to any of their events :/

I would highly suggest going to a National Portfolio Day, if there is one by you. I find it very helpful to have more people look through my work and tell me what I need to work on.
