Visual arts reputation

My son is currently a sophomore in high school and is beginning to look into where he would like to think about going to college. He is very interested in an art career- particularly along the lines of 3D/computer graphics. At the present time, he doesn't see himself at a stand alone art school, but wants a strong education in 2d, 3d and the technical areas as well as the ability to take liberal arts classes.

My mom's family is from NC and of course they all love UNC and would love to see him come down there (we are from Va.). What is the reputation of the art department at UNC? I know their performing arts department is strong, but what about the visual arts? He was looking on Pixar's website and saw UNC listed as one of the schools under the "Technical direction" area, so it piqued his interest. If anyone has any information, we would really appreciate it!

K: UNC has a strong art dept, though mostly in studio art (painting, sculpture) I think, with excellent faculty, who are also practicing artists. However, if your son is interested in computer graphics, I'd have him check out NC State University's Design School (in Raleigh), which is excellent for his interests. In addition to the regular application to NCSU, I believe one also has to submit a separate application to the Design School, a much tougher admit than to NCSU itself. Here's a link:

yea, i agree.....even though i love carolina and hate state (rah rah carolina lina....go to hell state).....lol.....by what you are typing I would say that your son will find more opportunities with graphic design at state. But as always don't totally count carolina out until you get more info.
