S is likely to major in CS + finance and would like to continue doing studio art in college. Will MIT provide enough opportunities for him? How about support/influence from his peers who are also interested in arts/writing at MIT? Are they minority at MIT? Or should I ask would they even have time to do arts as I heard MIT is a pressure cooker? Judging from CPW schedule, do students at MIT have enough sleep every night (day)?

Well, CPW is a special case – MIT definitely doesn’t have that many events going on at the same time normally.
But it’s true that MIT students are usually juggling a lot, and people are usually a little too busy and a little too sleep-deprived. Still, people make time for the things they care about.

I don’t know if any of the current posters are involved in fine arts (though someone may surprise me). One of the moms who used to post here a lot had a son involved in the visual arts community, but I haven’t seen her around here since he graduated.

There are definitely artists at MIT.

“MIT’s Visual Arts Program operates as a production- and education-based laboratory within the context of an advanced technological community. Our program explores the wider role and relevance of art in society and considers artistic practice as knowledge production, thus promoting an approach that challenges traditional genres and the limits of the gallery/museum context. Studio investigations and artistic research are realized through performance, video, photography, manufactured objects, electronic systems, interrogative design, as well as through experimental media and new genre. Central to the curriculum is the potential for students to concur with other areas of the MIT community.”
