So I'm looking at the CommonApp arts supplement and the arts supplement from each individual school. Will it matter which one I use? For example, I noticed that for the Common App arts supplement, one must submit a art/music teacher rec, while it is not needed for most of the school-specific arts supplements.

If the college you are applying to does have specs for submitting an art portfolio right on their website, then always adhere to their requirements. If you can’t find any specs on their website, email or call the college and ask if they have specs or if they prefer that you use the common app. If you use the common app’s supplement, don’t leave any part of it out.

Hmmm. I was worried using the Common App arts supplement mainly because of the art teacher recommendation. I don’t know my art teacher that well (I won’t have her until this coming year/senior year for AP Studio Art), and I already have 3 normal teacher recs + 1 counselor rec, so if I get a art teacher rec too I’d end up with a total of 5 recs.

Don’t worry about the 5th rec. Generally the art supp goes to the art dept of the school. The admissions office may or may not see the art teacher rec.

Nikkor, I notice your username - a unique name reminiscent of a particular camera. :D

Actually, it’s just Nikon’s lens line. :D

^ My bad. :D

My case is similar to yours. I interpreted my art teacher as ‘EC mentor’, since the real teacher is more inclined to drama and cinematography. And about specific requirements, I planned on asking several colleges so as to fulfill their conditions. :)
