Viterbo MT... Any thoughts, or comments about this program?

My D was just accepted to Viterbo for MT. We’ve done what we believe to be solid research, but would love additional insights. Thanks.

How did your D hear? Letter, phone call?

There is a thread I posted a while ago about the same issue. In that thread there was another thread from 2005, I believe, that gave some info about the program.

My D came home from school yesterday and there was message on the phone recorder. Surprisingly, they told her she was in via the message. They asked her to call to confirm. Sending good thoughts your way LizMT that the good news is on your way too. What are your feelings about this program? There isn't much said about it.

Yeah. I am iffy about this program. As far as I know, it isn't very well known. No one I have ever talked to has ever even heard of it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but you know its something to consider. Also, being from SoCal, I am pretty worried about the potential climate change to Wisconsin.

So i have mixed opinions. I like the intimacy of the program and I have had nothing but pleasant experiences with the admissions people.

So I dont know.

The students I have met who graduated from there, or currently go there have been very good.

We visited twice and it's on our radar. It is small, friendly, modern, affordable and has the biggest performing arts center we visited. They had play posters up in the hallway going all the way back to the sixties so the program has obviously been around a long time. I know that they have had some very successful graduates. It may not be a big name school but it's the kind of school you will receive a lot of attention. The Chair told us that she was retiring at the end of the school year so you may want to find out who her replacement is. The winters there can be brutal, hope you like to ice skate and ski. Two other final points, when they gave us the tour they pointed to a tall building and said there are nuns in there 24 X 7 praying for you. There was something very warming in that concept. They also mentioned that the campus was 70 percent female. Don't know if any of this was helpful but congratulations!

I GOT IN!!!

For theatre performance.

Does anyone know what that degree entails?

WAY TO GO LizMT!!!!!

My D did too! She auditioned for both MT and Theatre Performance because we were told they only had 4 spot for girls in MT. I think that they were a little MT heavy and wanted to fill up their Theatre Performance spots with good Acting/MT talent. This is a nice accomplishment as I believe they were only taking 12 Theatre Performance majors. To answer your question the best thing to do is call/ e-mail Rick Walters the dept chair or your admissions counselor. They should be able to mail or fax you the Curriculum. We did ask after our acting audition and what they told us was that we would be taking more acting classes so the empahasis is on acting. However, you will receive voice and dance lessons just not as much as an MT student. You can audition and participate in any play including the musicals as soon as you start (no freshman restrictions). They cast the best fit for the part whether they are MT or Theatre. I'm of the opinion that this is really a diamond in the rough as much of the available professional work is in acting not musicals.

We did receive the Financial Package too and the cost was considerably higher than what they had showed us when we visited. I plan to call the school and get an explanation and I'd be happy to e-mail you off line what I find out.

My niece is in the MT program at Viterbo and really likes the program itself. Her main problem is with the school. Other than the kids in theatre, she feels there are very few she has things in common with. Most are from nearby towns and she says everyone goes home on the weekends. Even the coffee shop is closed! So the weekends get pretty lonely for her. The other negative is the large female population - she would love it if there were a few more boys! But she really likes her classes and her teachers and feels she is learning a lot. They didn't have juries yet either which she was relieved about as she had been very nervous hearing about them from my S who is at a different school for MT. They seem to take it a little easier on the freshmen than in other MT programs (no music theory or piano, dance is more general).

I called and found out that they have not issued the talent awards yet and they should be sending that out soon. They also put a bottom line estimate on the financial paperwork which makes the tuition, room and board figures look like they increased around 5K over what they presented. The problem is they don't itemize everything so it's very confusing. Their explaination was that it was an estimate of fees, books, expenses etc. over and above the tuition, room and board and meal plans.

BFA Theatre Performance = BFA Acting

WOOOOOO

Congrats, Liz! That's so exciting. If you have any questions for a current student, I'm sure my niece would be happy to talk with you. She'd be happy to have a "California girl" around. Her dad lived in California for several years and she spent a lot of time there.

I would love to talk to her! Is she in the theatre program?

She is in the MT program, but there is a lot of mixing between the two BFA groups. I will contact her this weekend and send you a pm with her contact info. She is very friendly and candid so feel free to ask her anything!

Excellent! Thank you so much!
