Can we have the MITers post the most common lingo and acronyms...
like
UROPed?...

theres a blog on this from about 6 months ago somewhere on [MIT Admissions](http://www.mitadmissions.org)

Here are a couple of acronyms that we use frequently on the board…

UROP is the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, so to UROP is to do research in a lab.

GIRs are the General Institute Requirements, the required courses that all students must take (or pass out of). Currently there are 17 GIRs, including two semesters of physics, two semesters of calculus, a semester of chemistry, a semester of biology, two restricted electives in science/technology, eight HASS classes (see below), and a lab class.

HASS is Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Students typically take one HASS course per semester.

FSILG stands for Fraternities, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups – non-dorm MIT housing options. Freshmen can’t live in FSILGs due to the FOC (Freshmen on Campus) policy.

More confusing than the letter acronyms might be the numbering system – classes at MIT are numbered, as are departments/majors and buildings.

And MIT also has some words with MIT-specific meanings, like tool, punt, hack, and froshy.

Thanks, that helps. Will check the admin site as well
