I will be taking the psat as a junior this coming october. I want to be prepared for it like the SAT and part of that means knowing the neccessarily vocab. In Kaplan's 2007 psat study guide, there are ~1050 words. But I heard for a good vocab list, Barron's is the book I should get. So I bought Barron's 2007 SAT prep and it has 3000 words compared to the 1000 in Kaplan's PSAT. In addition, the Barron already has 250 already made vocab flashcards. So my questions are :1. Are the vocab lists for the SAT and PSAT similiar or should I first memorize PSAT then do SAT?
2. Isn't Barron's 3k word list excessive or is it just comprehensive? Since I only have 3 months till the PSAT but a whole year b4 the SAT, IMO I should first do the PSAT 1k list then the SAT 3k list.
3. In addition to the vocab list, I am memorizing the common words list. Will this be a good addition to my vocab lists or is unnecessary?
4. And lastly, is my method of sudying vocab deemed effective? I am using flashcards which I will do 15 a day. I will go back every few days to my previous words and go over them again. In addition, I will make sentences with the 15 words everyday.

wow, i wish i had more time. i got the conception of SAT in June (i'm from mongolia) after started seeking chances to study in the US. before that, all i knew was just TOEFL. kk.
i face lots of vocab problems as well as you. i think, you're going on right way. since you do have a whole year till the SAT, just prepare for it gradually. 15 words a day sounds really plausible to me.

I wouldn't memorize words. Just study a list of roots, prefixes and suffixes common on the SAT. Better yet, make a list of them from practice tests that you have. You'll forget all the words you memorized. Trust me.

Yes but I have about a year of time left till the SAT, and 3 months left till the PSAT. I think using my time to memorize at least 1k words and all the roots would not hurt. Can anyone please answer my specific questions? Like is the vocab on the PSAT the same as the SAT or do the words on the PSAT not show up on the SAT?

About the memorizing though, Xigi, who I have only recently come across his posts, says its not a good idea to memorize. So I rly dont know what I should do. I have to decide soon though. I'm wasting valuable study time.

yea root words are important regardless
if u want to memorize 1000 words knowing the root words would help u anyway

I decided to try both. My current method is when I face a new word, I look up its meaning and analyze its roots, according to my very very long roots list!!!
I think, this way I can memorize the words while I'm studying the roots!!!

I am not sure right now whether to memorize the 3k words lists or the 1k word lists. Oh man, the choices.
