Vocal Jazz Colleges?

I am a sophomore in high school, exploring my possible futures at different colleges, and am toying between the options of a vocal jazz major and a musical theatre major. I love musical theatre, but it is listed second because I think that at my height of 5 foot 2 and my size, bigger, I do not have a chance at big colleges like CCM or NYU. So if I were to explore the alternative of Vocal Jazz as my major, because I do have a passion for jazz, what are some colleges to study "sololy" for vocal jazz. I say "sololy", because people have referred me to Western Michigan before but I have heard that their program is more for the ensemble "Gold Company" Thank you so much for any feedback. It is helping me with my future!

Hi Jazzyjazz19, My daughter is also looking at Jazz vocal performance as a major. We're having trouble finding many schools with that focus, especially because she wants to be in a warm-climate state. We did find a great curriculum at Univ. North Texas. Does anyone have an opinion about that UNT, the campus culture, etc.? I'd also like to know of jazz vocal performance majors known to anyone at any southern schools. Thanks.

I'd suggest both of you repost in cc's music major forum. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/ You'll find a number of active jazz studies parents and students, and a wealth of music specific knowledge. Well worth spending some time going through the posts.

I'm more familiar with choices for instrumental performance programs, but in general UNT has a very solid music program, and historically the costs have been a bargain, even for out of state students.

Have you condisered any Tennessee schools? Belmont school of Music in Nashville Tennessee has a very good voice program. Their “jazz” vocal major is called Commercial voice. It is set up sort of like Burklee school of music. It is more of an industry school for someone looking to be a working musician. But I think it is a great option for someone wanting to study more contemporary voice styles, especially jazz.
