Vocal music for undergrads at Austin

Hi All - My daughter is still in flux about UT, Austin for voice (soprano). We are far enough away that a campus visit isn’t possible prior to the on campus audition in January-February, and she has to apply before being invited to interview. Can anyone address the quality of the voice and opera faculty, size of the program, and overall undergraduate music experience? Are there any issues with the department that would prevent you from considering it as a good place for an undergrad to go? I posted this in the music major forum but didn’t get any answers. Thanks!

As a vocal performance major who only really auditioned at schools in the Northeast, I don’t have much info about UT, Austin. But in general, I have learned to always just go for it and see for yourself before making a decision. She should definitely apply (while still applying to other schools) and just see how you like the campus when she auditions. In my experience a lot of schools surprised me, both in good ways and bad, and you just never know from facts on a website what you can tell in person. Just because you don’t see a lot online doesn’t mean it’s not a good program—it could be small enough to be perfectly tailored to her. And what really matters with vocalists anyway is the teacher. So no matter where she auditions, she should make sure there’s a teacher there she would enjoy working with. Good luck!
