Vocal performance audition-what are they looking for?

I auditioned at U of M today, and I’m pretty disappointed. I was super prepared going in, but stupid me cracked on the high note…twice. This never happens, but of course my allergies sucked today and nerves got the better of me. THEN I had a 2 second memory slip, but kept going smoothly. Despite these two issues, my technique, placement, and breath support was, overall, strong. If I showed off my voice well, how much do my two mess ups affect the faculty’s decision? It was clear I am a strong singer, but I just totally slipped. Also, I was only asked to sing 2 of the 4 selections…anyone else audition at U of M? I’m curious what this means—I know it could go either way.

You can only do your best. And “best” changes day by day. As a vocalist you will have hundreds of auditions. Stop beating yourself up.

Agree, if you can take anything from it to do better then do so and move on. If there is nothing different could do then just chalk it up to the best you could do that day. DD had to go one time just coming off step throat and not fully healed yet. She was still accepted. You cannot control what they are looking for in any one year.

Singing 2 songs is normal. Most often you choose the first one and they choose the second from your list. Always lead with your strongest one, the one that shows your voice to its best in the beginning and the one you are most comfortable with. Talk to your voice teacher about it.
