Vocal Performance major - not opera/classical

This may be an odd request and not even available, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a liberal arts college/university that offered the typical campus life (not a conservatory) and that also offered undergrad music majors an option to not study vocal opera/classical? My daughter has sung in large city chorus's (SF Girls' Chorus), as well as musical theatre at school and American conservatory ensembles, etc. She really wants to major in singing, but more jazz, contemporary, folk, cabaret. Is there anything like that, or would she need to choose between MT and the more classical, traditional focus? Thanks for any suggestions.

There is a current discussion of commercial music that might have info for you.

If you just want some suggestions in one concise post, I can help you out:

University of Southern California - Popular Music (rock, pop, R&B, etc)

University of Southern California - Music Industry with Jazz Voice

University of Miami - Creative American Music Minor (Music Business/Industry/Production major with contemporary singer/songwriter minor)

University of Miami - Jazz Voice

The New School - Jazz Voice (option for blues ensemble & probably more)

Berklee College of Music (conservatory) - pretty much everything under the sun in regard to what you’re looking for

Ithaca College - Jazz Voice

University of Massachusetts at Amherst - Jazz & African American Music Studies (accepts vocalists)

University of the Arts (school for arts students only) - Voice program including choral music, jazz, musical theatre style, some classical…

Cornish College of the Arts (v. small, conservatory-like)- Jazz Voice

Temple University - Jazz Voice

I’m sure there are others I’ve researched, I just can’t think of any more. Beware of some schools that are open-enrollment or just plain unusual. For instance, I wouldn’t bother applying to Columbia College Chicago or any Musician’s Institute, but I’m sure there are some people who have found what they were looking for in pursuing education there, so I guess it just depends on your individual standards and needs. Best of luck!
