I am looking to major in vocal performance. The only thing is that I don't have any help paying for school and I don't have anyone who will co-sign for my student loans. Does naybody know of colleges/conservatories that are less expensive but still have good programs? My mother just recently passed away from Breast Cancer so that is also a huge financial strain on us. Thanks for all the help!

Look at the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music. They are a state school and are less expensive than most private schools. In addition, they are very highly ranked in music and in vocal performance. In fact, their rankings surprisingly puts them in the league with Oberlin, Bard, Rice etc.

They also are known to give out good need-based and merit scholarships too. They also have a university wide scholarship entitled the "Cincinnatus" scholarship which most kids with decent GPA get, which will reduce the cost by at least $5,000 per year in addition to any CCM scholarship.. It provides a minimum of $5,000 per year. You do, however, need to participate in their Cincinnatus competition and write an essay while you are there and participate in some leadership exercises.

Also, check out your state universities to see if they have good vocal performance programs. That would be an inexpensive way to go.

Check out UC's web site at www.uc.edu amd go to the academic departments/ CCM site.

Sorry about your mom.

Moving on, here are some excellent music schools:

Julliard
Peabody
New England Conservatory
Curtis
U of Indiana

Since you understandably concerned about money, these schools have excellent reputations for financial aid and wonderful vocal music programs:

Yale
Princeton

Good Luck and May you keep hitting the high C’s with ease :)

Yeah I live in Nebraska so not so much with the good vocal performance program here. We used to have an amazing director at UNO, but he left the school. Thanks so much for your suggestion. My problem is that I was really big on theatre in high school as opposed to just singing. So most of my extra curricular stuff had to do with that. I just so all these other posts from other kids younger than me doing all sorts of workshops and what-not with colleges. I never got to do any of that stuff, so I'm scared I'm extremely behind and mediocre.

You are not mediocre!!! You are special – Don’t let anyone say otherwise.
Keep practicing, keep singing, study hard, involve with other ECs. You will end up with a good music college.

Don’t forget your mom in heaven is praying devoutly for you- you should be fine :)

Dite alla giovine - si' bella e pura
Ch'avvi una vittima - della sventura,
Cui resta un unico - raggio di bene
Che a lei il sacrifica - e che morra'!

Arupnow, there are many things that I don't know. However, I do know this:

"If you think you are mediocre, you will be. If you think you can be great, you will be. The only limit to human capacity is in our minds IF we believe it. "

You could go to a voice teacher for an evaluation and see if you have talent. An evaluation can't hurt.

Also, sorry to hear about your mom. It is hard to lose a parent at any age but especially at your age.

One of the Oklahoma schools - OSU I think - has quite a good music program and wonderful financial aid. You might look there.
