While it may not be always the case, if you can spare the time and a little bit of money (gas maybe if nearby or a cheap plain ticket) then I can’t see of any negative reasons for visiting. But I do wish I had a much better prescreening… but live and learn

Hi everyone! I’m a mezzo applying for graduate level voice performance programs. So far I’ve gotten word from the following schools:

NEC, Graduate - Dec. 20, e-mail (declined)
Mannes, Graduate - Dec. 29, e-mail (passed)

I’ve also applied to the Westminster Choir College performance and pedagogy program (no prescreening involved). Just waiting to hear from Peabody! Does anyone know when/how I should expect a response from them? That’s actually how I found CC in the first place.

Best of luck to everyone!

Well okay then, please disregard the question in my previous post!

Does anybody know when MSM will confirm audition dates? We’ve got serious conflicts that week and I’d prefer to know well ahead re: plane reservations. S requested the only day that he was available, but now the website says that day is only for grad audition. Sigh…I’m glad he’s my last kid.

When my D received her Prescreen decision from MSM, it said that specific audition date and time would be emailed by February 1. She is also an Undergrad.

Congratulations, mezzoswag! Nice job!

Congrats to you, as well, herranrukous! Exciting. :)

^^megpmom, I know just what you mean about wanting to plan ahead. It can be so stressful waiting for these big announcements. We’ve got lives going on here! It’s not easy to just drop everything, purchase last-minute, always-more-expensive, plane tickets, and just GO on a whim! Planning is my friend…

Hello,
Peabody undergrad snail mail 1/17 (passed)
Northwestern undergrad e-mail (decline)
Boston U undergrad e-mail 1/18 (passed)

I really wish I understood what they look for. Of the 12 we’ve heard from she’s been fortunate to be offered 10 auditions. Interestingly enough her 2 declines where from programs she’d never visited, or contacted for information. I really do believe what I’ve been hearing about colleges wanting students who show interest in their program.

yellowsub,
I don’t know what they are looking for, either, and it is so frustrating. My D was also declined by Northwestern, but here’s the thing. She visited three times, taking lessons with two members of faculty. Both told her that the pre-screening shouldn’t be a problem, having heard her sing. Both know and respect her voice teacher. Her “Why Northwestern” essay made it clear that the school was top of her list. Her grades/scores are excellent and definitely in line with NW’s expectations. The same pre-screen has passed two other prestigious schools which she had not visited while failing a less prestigious school that was at the bottom of her list (where she also visited, took a voice lesson and was assured by the teacher that the pre-screening was “just to weed out students who were not technically prepared or chose wrong repertoire”). It makes no sense at all. I’ve come to the conclusion that the pre-screening process is far from infallible and causes faculty to miss out on some of the most talented, most committed applicants. Surely applying in the first place, paying fees, and flying out to audition are all solid indications of interest?

Annie43 - This is just a crazy process! I have a feeling our kids are going to have to deal with this for their entire careers…audition to audition.

I may be wrong, but I think that for VPs, they are looking for voice types to fit into planned productions in future years. So if you are a vocal type that they are not specifically seeking, you may be out of luck, no matter how excellent your prescreening material is. In this way, VP majors have something in common with actors auditioning for theater programs, and with instrumentalists applying to conservatories on instruments that have a very low numerical representation in an orchestra, e.g., tuba. At least that’s my theory.

If they are looking to fill future needs with specific voice types, then I sincerely wish they would provide potential students with that information so that our kids are not spending time, money, and hopes auditioning or pre-screening for schools that do not have a place for them. How hard would it be to state on application materials that no sopranos are invited to audition this year? Harsh, but fair.

But going back to my original point, surely college should be about education, not casting, especially when young voices are yet to develop?

I think casting operas only truly comes in to play in grad school. For undergrad what is really working against voice auditioners are the staggering number of applicants. (especially sopranos) I imagine that they have to set the limit to a certain amount of sopranos that they will listen to. Lets say 75 was the absolute cut off and they probably listened to upwards of 300 or more screening CD’s and came up with 100 that were truly promising. For all you know your D was the unlucky 76th. This happens. This is no indicator that they initially did not think that your D was promising. There are just a lot of other young sopranos who are promising as well.

addendum: And yes, it stinks.

It is truly a frustrating, bewildering, challenging process. I’m sorry for all those who are facing disappointment. It’s such a bad feeling to discover that something (or ‘somewhere’)you REALLY, REALLY wanted and worked for is no longer within reach.

Thanks for posting your pre-screen results, yellowsub, and congratulations for your 2 successes! Peabody is already on my list. I’ll add your Boston U below. When did your D hear from Northwestern? I’ll post it to the list after I hear back from you.

Best of luck to all! Fortunately, it seems that most students we know tend to be happy wherever they end up. It’s almost like it’s a self-selecting process, in some ways. Though I do recognize that great applicants are sometimes bypassed while less-great applicants are sometimes mysteriously accepted. Still … I believe that chances are good that no matter where all of these students end up, they WILL be happy.
