Vocal Performance PreScreen Notifications - Graduate and Undergraduate

^I think of that ALL the time, yelllowsub. It is NOT fair that it’s such an expensive process. I don’t know a good workaround for that, but it always, always occurs to me that this process inadvertently favors those who can find the means to pay for it and inadvertently turns away those who can’t. I, personally, have taken on credit card debt to pay for some of my son’s many audition expenses, outfits, travel, etc. It paid off in his undergrad search, and then some, thanks to beaucoup scholarships that far outweighed the incurred debt. Which is what I was hoping for. But what if it hadn’t? Counting my blessings ALL the time!

And I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment: “It is what it is, and will be what it will be.” That is simply the truth, imo. I tell that sort of thing to my kids all the time. That sort of philosophy simultaneously seems to take the pressure off AND frees them up to do their best. Nobody’s out for perfection at this stage of the game. They’re all applying TO LEARN.

Well, congrats on her Early Decision success! I was thinking it was a different poster who turned down all those auditions. I remember that thread. That was very considerate of you and your D, yellowsub! Wishing you all the best at her remaining 2 auditions and wherever that talented, sweet singer finds herself! :)

^^^^Hi, ATLAST. Congratulations on your D’s Juilliard prescreen success! To answer your question (above), yes, I think a knee-length, nice dress would be fine and appropriate. A solid color may be a good, conservative, safe choice. But I don’t think it HAS to be solid-colored. My limited ‘expertise’ is in the realm of menswear for auditions, lol. But a very quick, very cursory search turned up the following threads on the subject:

(I could SWEAR I saw a much more recent thread on this same subject not too long ago … but, alas, I was unable to find it in my 2-3-minute search. I hope these threads help!)

Simplelife - thanks once again! D has 5 auditions in the midwest/east - but traveling from Oregon makes it tough, so trying to combine on weekends when possible to save on flights-still will be three weekends though. She has 3 in the NW which are within driving distance (one complete).

And, like probably all of us, I have a busy life too - an out of town business team meeting sandwiched between audition weekends! So, also trying to plan everything out and make reservations, etc.

On the topic of helping other kids…I have learned so very much about this process (which we are just venturing into), that I’m going to write something up for D’s high school career/guidance center. I don’t think we had much of a clue, and would have loved advice a few years ago! Its not much, but a start and this forum will definitely be highlighted! Thanks again to all of you!

Re attire for auditions for female singers: wear something that is becoming and not distracting. Be aware that the audition panel may be sitting below (or above) the stage level, and can see more than you might imagine. Legs should be covered in such a way that they do not distract, with skirts not too short, especially if the singer does not have the legs of a dancer or volleyball player. Showing deep cleavage is not appropriate for audition attire. Wearing heels so high that those of us listening have to worry about how the singer is able to walk is not a good idea either…it shows poor judgement and body awareness, IMHO. In previous years, most young women were wearing clingy jersey wrap dresses. This year they are wearing lots of spanx and tightly fitted sheath dresses, or fitted tops with bell shaped skirts (more likely in a print, but some solid colors). A classic shape and outfit is always appropriate. Good luck to all.

I don’t think they can breathe well enough to sing in spanx! Those jersey dresses travel really well in a suitcase.

Some of the young women I have seen (and heard) look pretty compacted in their attire. If it was not Spanx, it must have been boned corsets! (Spanx would at least be a tight but flexible resistance for breathing and support, but I have never tried it.) The jersey wrap dresses are fine if there are no lumps, but they show everything. Everyone wore them for a couple of years, but very few this year, at least on the east coast. Of course, current style is immaterial to how the singer sounds.

Thanks to all for the tips on what to wear for my D’s audition. I think we have it covered (no pun intended), and I appreciate the feedback and personal advice!

May I also suggest taking a spare along. My D was on an audition with my H, and went to the bathroom to change into her “lucky” dress, only to find that her zipper had completely broken. Thank goodness I had insisited that she pack an extra audition dress!

Last but not least–Peabody! After receiving no word either way, even after others on CC had reported passing the prescreening, D emailed today to request results for her undergrad pre-screen. She got an email back right away, saying the letter was mailed on Jan 8th and she had passed! Now, I know I have been really, really careful with mail this month, especially once I knew others on CC had received letters in early January. D is very happy–I just hope we can get a reasonable flight and hotel at this late date. If anyone out there has not received word from Peabody, call or email them right away! It might be good news.

^This is wonderful news, annie43! Congratulations to you and your D!!! Holy smokes. That is nerve-wracking, huh? It seems that every year, a handful of people have this sort of difficulty with one school or another. I’m sorry it had to be you this year!
Happy for you. :)

Adding annie43’s good news …

Hi-is there a list for final decisions yet?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1427644-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2013-a.html</a></p>

Good luck!

That is the list for acceptances, but I am about to start one for final decisions now that I see one has been announced.

There, I’ve done it - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1457188-master-list-music-school-final-decisions-fall-2013-a.html</a></p>

Has anyone heard from McGill University yet? Or know when they will give out audition dates?

I heard from McGill on Thursday! Auditions are March 2-5.

How did you hear from them? My application status says: Decision release date: March 1st 2013. What do you think that means? I’m getting really anxious and worried!!

They sent me an email! I honestly haven’t even checked Minerva yet… I don’t understand what that means. I would assume it means your admission decision would be released on March 1, but that makes no sense because it’s before auditions…

Yay! Congratulations to you, ImThinking! So can I assume you passed the prescreen and that you were notified on Feb 10? I’ll add it to our list after I hear back from you.

I had no idea that all the prescreens weren’t in yet. That’s a late one, isn’t it?

Congrats again! ;)
