Another thing to keep in mind: Sometimes your voice picks your path.
That was the case for my D. She was accepted to both MT and VP…but the enthusiasm and money from VP was better. Plus getting to see some operas on campus plus MT shows…and seeing her “competition” and where she would fit, it was all very informative about what path she should take.
My D has a naturally big voice that works better in opera than belting or contemporary (but note it ALL worked in high school…college is different). She is doing regional opera, operetta and theater with music now…bc she knows how to work with her voice and what to try for. But getting a role (besides chorus) in a good MT show…no, no, no…that ship has sailed. Maybe something in a classical MT show…but it’s not her focus. That is why I have said in the past…try for both if interested and see the responses from schools. Look carefully at the programs…AND try to see shows. Somehow kids seem to figure out where they fit by watching each other.
