What are the chances of being a musical theater actor with a vocal performance major. I was looking at the CMU Vocal Performance website and it said that they prepare their students for both opera and musical theater. They produce both operas and musicals and Vocal majors take both acting and dance classes.

I also read that its possible to apply to CMU for acting, musical theater, and vocal performance. But is it hard to get into CMU's vocal performance program?

As long as your acting and dance standard are up to scratch and you can deliver to the same standard as MT grads at auditions - there shouldn't be a problem.

First, I have a friend at CMU's VP program and said the new head of the department is trying to eliminate the dance and acting classes--so that's something to look into.

I'm pretty sure it's a difficult program to get into, but some of Broadway's best were Vocal Performance majors. It might take a little more dedication on your part to get the acting/dancing you feel you will need in the real world, but you just might get better vocal training that could prepare you for the vocal challenges of the real world than an MT major.

I know all programs are different. My S goes to OCU, he started out in MT and switched to VP. The VP & MT programs are taught by the same teachers, my S's vocal studio is probably 1/2 & 1/2. The VP majors have mostly a classical rep with some MT selections and its the opposite with the MT kids. Everbody is required to audtion for all operas and all musicals and there is alot of "cross casting" between the programs. The VP kids take more muisc and the MT kids take more acting and dance, but everybody does both. And some double major, which takes an extra year.
