I’m looking for specific suggestions from more experienced music parents, and it was suggested that I might get some feedback if I made my own post.
A little bit of background to help with what I’m looking for: My daughter is a senior, and she has been singing with her voice teacher for the past four years. She has always had a great voice, but she is just beginning to hit her stride vocally. She has always done well with NYSSMA (we’re in NY state), at Art Song Festivals, All-State, etc. But just recently, her voice has really been growing and her voice teachers have been able to help her pin down her range. She sings anywhere from Alto II to Soprano I, but it seems she is going to be a soprano in college. We are in the middle of completing pre-screening recordings and trying to set up sample lessons with professors at some of her top-choice schools. We had decided upon a list of schools she was planning to apply to, with some solid choices, and a couple of schools we considered reaches.
However, based on really positive feedback she has received from sample lessons with professors, we are updating her application list to include more schools that we had previously considered reaches. We are also continuing to expand the number of schools where we are setting up sample lessons. She would like to remain in the Northeast and within driving distance of home, so we are looking at schools in New York and nearby.
Here’s where my request for help comes in. If anyone has any input about which vocal professors would be good ones to study with at any of the following schools, I would really love to hear from you: New England Conservatory, Mannes, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman, Schulich at McGill, Boston University.
I am also wondering about the programs at schools like Boston University, Syracuse University, Rutgers Mason Gross, the Hartt School, etc. How do they compare to some of the conservatories I mentioned above? Would they be solid choices for someone who plans to pursue vocal performance and has been identified as having some potential?
Thank you in advance and feel free to PM me with any information that might be helpful!
