I'm very aware that my GPA is not stellar. It's fine, just not stellar. When I take honors/AP classes, it tends to be that I get B's and they're weighted as A's. So please take that into consideration.

I'm planning to sell myself as a swimmer, singer, and a political freak. I can speak very intelligently about music and politics (and other things, obviously). I think that might help me at Yale, but not really at anywhere else. I really do spend a ton of time singing, my voice is pretty good, and I'm going to send a tape to be judged.

Yale is my first choice, I'm going to apply EA, and my counselor is supposed to shmooze them and tell them I'll be entering their class of 2008 if they give me admission.

I'll get really amazing rec's from my English, Spanish, History, and Vocal Teacher. That's both a comment and a question. Who should I ask to recommend me? Should I use my vocal teacher if I'm going to sell myself as a singer?

Finally, (Swear I'm Done), I'll be interning at the U.S. Attorney's Office and learning about attorneyship, as well as collaborating with Sandra Day O'Connor on a Political Education program to promote Government education in the U.S., and swimming all summer.

Where will I be able to get in?

anyone? hello?

Yale loves choir boys. That's really the best thing you have going for you.
Other than that, you're an average over-achiever with less than over-achiever standard grades. That does not bid well.

Are you from a sunbelt state? Wesleyan loves those sunbelters.

For letters of recommendation, you'd ideally want to get one from an English or history teacher, one from a math or science teacher, and then one extra one from your voice teacher. Some schools will say specifically what they do and don't want, so you'll just have to look up each one's requirements. I think it's fine to send one more than they ask for, but I wouldn't go much beyond that.

I'm from Arizona, and I'm going to probably get National Merit Semi-Finalist. Anyone else?

Grades will keep you from Yale/Brown unless you can be recruited.

Contact the Coach and talk it over. They will be able to give you the best idea of whether you can get in or not. I wouldn't be suprised if you got in somewhere because of swimming...so keep that in mind. Contact all the Coaches on your list.

what the hell does it mean to be accepted in to the class of 2008. next year is 2008, how will that work considering we'll be class of '12

by the class of 2008 i mean the class of 2012. thank you for the correction, however uncouth it may have been.

so, does Yale place a lot of emphasis on choir for application?

To your question, I'm not sure.. I'd guess that choir wouldn't be anymore of a hook than involvement in another activity, but who knows? Anyways, I was wondering what your class rank was, because if your at a competitive school, and so have an ok GPA, but good class rank, you'll have a much better chance!

it's really competitive for the top 50 slots out of 500. it's sort of odd. but the other 450 slots are pretty damn easy to come by. I'm expecting like.... definitely above the 15th percentile. Maybe 10th. I know that's not good. That's not my hook by any means.

does anyone have any changes of opinion based on that?
Also, does anyone know of any large schools based around cities that should be fairly easy for an out-of-state student to get in?
I.E.
Boston University
New York University

Doesn't have to be DEAD in a city, but close would be nice. I just like the urban atmosphere. Like Northwestern, except easier to get in.

anyone?
bump

bumpppppppp

wow it seems like i'm finding a bunch of arizona kids today! well you and i are the same year so idk how much my opinion is worth but, for all the ivy leagues, i would get your sat ii scores higher. choir is somewhat unique considering you're a guy, and plus, you're good. i would say GWU, BU, UT, and Univ. of Washington are all match/safeties for you. and all the ivies are reaches, but isn't that the way it always is?

thank you. yeah, they're ivies for pretty much everyone. anyone else?

i'm working at the US Attorney's Office this summer. Evidently I'm the only high-schooler to ever get this internship. Any more thoughts?

Oh. I won the National Merit Semi-Finalist deal, and I've decided to apply to Northwestern Early Decision. Do you think I'll get in?

Oh, sorry. I'm also 34th out of 422 students. Which is 8%, putting me in the top ten percent.
