Voice and Dance as a Freshman

For what it’s worth, D is once again registered for voice and dance for her second freshman quarter. Between a cappella, MT seminar, voice lessons and rehearsals for shows, she has been singing more at NU than she ever has – and that’s saying a lot!

When D was home for Winter break and compared notes with friends in top BFA programs, she came away more impressed with the program at NU than ever. Her local well-respected voice teacher has at least 2 students who are unhappy in their current programs and are trying to transfer to NU.

We’ve heard that there were a record number of ED applications and that ~40% of the incoming class has been filled through ED this year, so clearly many students have made the program their first choice, including one of D’s talented friends who is currently in his 3rd Broadway show.

D did report that one of her academic classes (200-level math) was HARD, and this is coming from someone who has always had an unusual talent for math.

I hope the rest of the year is as much fun for her as the first quarter was, and that those of you applying to schools this year have made it past the Common App phase of your lives!

Thanks for all your info on NU, MomCares! I’m assuming your D applied RD, since the ED at NU is binding. Do you remember and/or have any idea when the decisions will be sent out for RD applications? I’m thinking they won’t be sent out for a while still, but just wondering!

You are most welcome! I appreciate the pm’s and comments, as otherwise I really would feel like I talk to myself. ;-D

D applied ED last year, because NU was her absolute top choice. She had a few BFA acceptances before the ED arrived, but cancelled all her remaining auditions (UMich, CCM, CMU, etc.) and pulled all applications (Yale, Brown, etc.) after she was admitted to Northwestern.

You might want to check the regular Northwestern thread (under “CC Top Universities”) as there are lots of discussions about RD this year, including questions/comments by many Theatre kids.

Oh, I see! Thanks!

I recently learned that NU Freshman also select, direct and fully produce a musical each year. This year they’re doing “The Wedding Singer”.

Just wanted to add that D completed registration for the final quarter of her freshman year this week, and I can now officially report that she has had Voice and Dance for her entire freshman year at NU.

This quarter she has added private Classical Voice lessons with a grad student, on top of MT Voice with a prof (small group of 4 + private coaching), MT Workshop and a cappella so she is getting PLENTY of vocal work.

Today is also a continuation of NU’s 30 hour Dance Marathon (one of the largest student fundraisers in the country - last year they raised over $1M), so at least today I’m guessing she’s doing even MORE dancing than she wants to. ;-D

In addition to structured voice and dance training, D has been in two musicals and an MT development group called WAA2 this year, so even before auditioning for the MT program she has had a very full MT experience her freshman year and couldn’t be happier!
