Voice at Stanford

Hi -- We are still waiting to hear from conservatories that everyone else seems to have heard from already (hope this isn't a bad sign), which gives us a lot of time to wonder about music at the options D has at this point. And the question is, how is voice at Stanford? Does anyone have a S or D who has attended recently? How is the music scene? There seem to be a lot of faculty-run choruses and ensembles through the music dept. with challenging rep. as well as an opera society, altho I can't find any info on the opera group online. I would really appreciate it if someone could fill me in! Thanks.

The voice faculty is unknown to me, though choral person has some credentials. General impression of music faculty is that there is quite an emphasis on accoustics, music theory/composition, etc. Julianne Baird is a fine singer, and she did her DMA at Stanford. She is on voice faculty at Rutgers at Camden. She is a lovely person, and you might contact her for perspective. Good luck. Lorelei

Dear Lorelei, You are always so helpful and knowledgable. Thanks! I'll get in touch with her.

Cannot give you any information on Stanford, but congrats to your daughter on her Stanford acceptance! I think you mentioned your daughter's interests in Peabody: I'm pretty sure Peabody sent out their acceptances on either last Thursday or Friday (I got mine on Friday b/c I live less than some 20 miles away from Peabody). So she should get hers next Monday or Tuesday, unless you live in a farm middle-of-nowhere... Good luck on both the decisions and the selection afterward!

If my child was accepted at Stanford, I would wring their neck if they passed it up (just kidding, but not really)! What a wonderful opportunity. Singing is a skill, and conservatories are trade schools. Have her get an education, find a good voice teacher, enrich her mind and heart.....she can still be a singer if she wishes. Stanford charges extra for the lessons anyway, so she can study with someone off campus who is wonderful, if that is necessary.
